Here's some shots from the 19th. First one is through the Megrez, and is a stack of 46 jpg shots. The rest are through the SCT. All prime focus with the Canon 10d.















I got my tele-converter for the camera, and it sure is nice. I haven't had the chance to really shoot anything, I've just been standing around shooting the trees, rooftops, airplanes, my shoe, etc.. Nothing to post. I noticed that when you're trying to hold something with a 600mm focal length steady, it doesn't work out too good. But, it's only a matter of practice.

I like the Lunar shots, but especially the whole Moon one.

Why did you stack 46? Just curious.

Pretty soon, the Chicago Astronomers will resume our Full Moon Rise observation sessions...I think with April's Moon...

I was shooting in burst mode with the remote, and the camera takes up to 9 frames. I stacked whatever frames were the same size. I guess it ended up being 5 rounds of 9, plus the one that Registax adds. That would be my guess. Without actually counting the frames, I wouldn't know for sure. 45+1=46.

I didn't see anything spectacular out of the single frames, so I took the chance to stack a bunch of them. It didn't come out half-bad, but I don't like how the stacking creates those goofy rings around the Moon, and sometimes jacks up the gamma on some craters.

I would have liked the shots to come out better, but I was shooting through a haze of clouds, and the brightness of the Moon gave me a small fight with exposure settings. I don't know why, but for some reason I just wasn't getting what I wanted for the night. The shots through the SCT didn't come out as good as I expected either.


I've had the double whammy of tinkering with not only the new scope, but the new camera as well. Once I get my head out of my rear-end, I will take the Fuji out and do some comparisons of how prime focus stacks up against afocal. I know the full-frame shots from prime focus stuff will be more pleasing, but I'm wondering if the afocal shots being through the eyepiece will give a sharper image. The SCT is a different story. I've been waiting for a good enough night to collimate it. Since I've been out this year, I've been using it out of collimation. It's not out a lot, but it is out enough to easily see in a star test. I just haven't had the time to play around with it. I've been too busy using it to care.

I don't do a lot of astrophotography...here you are king, but I have found it easier to take shots without a eyepiece and use the zoom on the camera to magnify to what I desire.

I think that any extra glass you out in between the camera and the object bounces the light around more.
