How very nice to hear from you again and great about your educational pursuits at Purdue.
What's wrong with the 12x60's? Those should be quite a decent pair for astronomical use. Fellow Chicago Astronomer Becky has a pair similar. Are they too heavy, mis-aligned or poor optics?
10x50's are just fine, that's what I use. They are light and have a good field of view. Good for birding too.
When you do make your way to Chicago, let me know. We will meet and I'll take you on a tour of the Adler Planetarium.
