After School Matters 2024 Winter Preview Immersion
Astronomy Class: Bias in Space & Astronomy
Astronomy Class: Bias in Space & Astronomy
Exploring the cosmos is a wonderful discipline, either as a hobby or profession...but sometimes it doesn't go smoothly or others who may stand in your way of your pursuit of interest.
We force our selves into space by explosives and brute force...and things can go wrong. Or mismanagement or even from ourselves via biases, prejudices and other manmade obstacles, hindering exploration of space because of race, sexual orientation, color or economic backgrounds. In this Winter Preview class, we will examine and discuss this area of exclusions.
Why did it take the United States over 20 years to send a woman in space...whereas the Russians did so in the 1960's?
Who was the first African American U.S. Astronaut?
The first Astronaut of Hispanic origin?
What happened to the "Mercury 13" women who trained to be astronauts....?
What's the real story behind "Hidden Figures"?
Who really discovered the planet Uranus?
What was the reason for the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster?
In our 8 day class, we will indulge in these topics and mark this as a preview to our regular full term Spring class starting near the end of February.
How can you you participate?
Hundreds apply for the opportunity to join my In-Person Astro crew and earn a stipend while you learn. (Note: If you apply for the stipend as your primary reason and not interested in learning or participating, I recommend you try something else.
