Our Last Chicago Astronomer 606 Trail event for the 2023 Astro season
Friday 15 December 2023
Friday 15 December 2023
We have had a solid busy 2023 season at the 606 Trail, attending to thousands of visitors eager to connect with the cosmos and this Friday was our last Chicago Astronomer event for the year.
The weather was iffy, with a cloud mass moving in, but we started early at 6:30 pm and was able to share a nice Jupiter with our guests. And even as the clouds rolled in, the C11 scope was able to punch through the clouds and still display the planet. I mounted the new 100mm Makustov scope to the C11 tube and it performed nicely.
I think I will keep it in a regular rotation of auxiliary scope riding on the OTA.
Joining me tonight were two of my ASM Astronomy students, which coincidentally are doing independent stories on me for their school projects as a leader in urban Astronomy...
Jade was my ASM student for this Fall 2023 session and was a great astro teen. She will be back for future classes and become a class leader.
Also on site was Ian, who has been with me for several ASM classes and is doing a video on my activities...
He is also a great urban Deep Space Astrophotographer, right from under the glare of Northside Chicago!..
Amazing work. I will be his student so he can teach me how he does it.
New arrival is David, who just got himself a 8" Orion Dobsonian scope and eager to gain instruction on it's use. We had a great time with him and a new Chicago Astronomer crew member is born....placing a Chicago Astronomer sticker on the scope.
Excellent.
Speaking of stickers...veteran crew member Eddie, brought his Orion scope and shared views with our visitors, placing his own Chicago Astronomer sticker on his scope.
(I am starting a gallery on Astronomers and fans with my sticker displayed. Soon, we will have representation around the world! Request one and I'll send one to you.)
David was thrilled on grabbing his first image of Jupiter and I was excited for him on his start of his personal exploring of the cosmos and honored to be part of the adventure...
We spent about three hours out on the trail, chatting, making new fans and testing out gear....
Shout out to: Tom, Eddie, David and Maria for this fun session.
We will be back next year as the Resident Astronomer Crew at the 606 Bloomingdale Trail, starting in March/April 2024.
