The Chicago Astronomer at the 606 Trail
Saturday 18 November 2023
Saturday 18 November 2023
November skies can be treacherous with snow showers, gale force winds and just lousy conditions. But sometimes, November can produce crisp clear skies. as we had at our public session event at the 606 trail Saturday evening. Joining us this evening were Chicago Astronomers Tom & John, bringing their Dob and Fork mounted scopes and Maria in our support crew....
I brought my trusty 11" SCT, a scope that has connected thousands of sky lovers across the region over the years.
For this session, I tested out a camera/monitor set-up with good success. Sometimes, these configurations work and when they do, it's great. Sometimes, things just don't synch well and just tear it out. But, for this event the set-up worked well, displaying very decent views on the monitor of Jupiter, Saturn and the waxing Moon in nice detail.
Displaying images on the monitor also enables me to lecture on the object artifacts en masse and taking questions from the group. It also allows guests to take as many photos as they please without commandeering time at the eyepiece, keeping others from enjoying the views....
It was certainly chilly, but we enjoyed discussing all thing astronomical with our fans - both veteran and new....
This was also an opportunity for a photo shoot that the "Reader" publication will do on me and the Chicago Astronomer on delivering the cosmos to the city to thousands of sky lovers. (Look for the special edition of the Reader in the December issue of the paper....hope I look good! ) Our photographers were very nice and accommodating and we spent the conclusion of our astro session with photographs of me and my scope...
We shared views of our celestial targets with the photo crew, to their delight...
