It’s nearly time for my monthly naked-eye New Moon spotting challenge, which can be difficult for observers north of the tropics while still near the autumnal equinox. The first realistic opportunity for North Americans will come with the two-day-old Moon on October 6.

Below is a photo of the waxing crescent Moon that I shot from Arlington Heights, Illinois on 2011 OCT 28 at 18:18 CDT while the Moon was aged 2.1 days.

I got lucky tonight, and spotted the new Moon about an hour ago, at 6:32 PM CDST, from Valparaiso's Central Park Plaza. Here are the faint, sliver Moon, and Venus.




8:50:48 CDST.
