I stumbled across this article on The Atlantic yesterday.

Imagine 150 to 300 foot tall towers with clusters of carbon arc lamps at the top.

The article even mentions that Aurora, Illinois had 6 of them.



I can't imagine what light pollution would be like if this idea had stuck around.

Austin still has a few. They are quaint. Downward facing lamps, no lighthouses, and 150' at the most. Not many left. See one in "Dazed and Confused."
