Hi guys,
With xmas just around the corner and will be getting some Amazon gift cards, I was thinking of purchasing a light pollution filter to use on my eyepieces. I just wanted to ask if anyone has used these and if so could you please give me some input on the views you got from using them. I know they are quite pricey and really want to know how you like using them and if they help with the views living under the light polluted Chicago skies. Would it be a good investment to buy? I was looking at the Celestron 1.25 UHC Telescope Eyepiece Filter. I am open to suggestions on brands that you more advanced astronomers would recommend.

i like the orion ultra block. honestly ur best bet is to try out some of ours before u buy.

Filters are a good way to combat the light pollution we must punch through...and a very good investment.

I am very content with the Zhumell Light Pollution filter...

I keep it on the right diagonal at all times...and you have taken a peek through it when you were with the C11. It does lend a slight purple-ish tint, but does increase the contrast nicely.

Dayzed, I think you will find an LP filter a nice addition... For now, anyway.

While filters block the common wavelengths of streetlighting, keep in mind that as more LED lighting comes into use, emitting more broadly across the spectrum, that filtering will start to give diminished returns. I'm not trying to dissuade you from getting a filter; it will be useful for quite awhile. But the reality is that we are still losing the fight against light pollution, and even worse, will someday lose our tools to mitigate its effect if current attitudes among some astronomers, the public, and the powers that be continue unchanged.

While LP filters are no substitute for the dark skies of our ancestors, every little bit helps, and will reveal to you a little more of our galaxy and universe.

come to think of it you are right Paulie. The skies were super clear for the Geminids. I hope the skies are clear for the upcoming Quadrantids on Jan 4th.

Joe, is that Zhumell a 2" filter?

On the subject of light pollution, I recently became an IDA member and contacted Audrey with the Chicago Astronomical Society. I'd like to do what I can to raise awareness if anything. I'd like to have more dark parks in Chicago. Is there anyone else on CA that is actively pursuing this?
