I've seen this question asked a lot on other forums: "What telescope should I get?" Where it becomes even more important is when someone looking to buy a telescope for someone else, because often at that time, glossy pictures of large-looking planets or claims of extreme magnification are used to sway the uninitiated.

So I've tried to take a lot of the guesswork out of it. Based on many telescopes I have owned myself, ones that others have recommended, and a general knowledge of telescopes and important price points, I have put together a list of 9 telescopes from prices ranging from under $100 up to $400 and listed some quick pros and cons of each. I hope this helps a few people make a better decision about a possible telescope-gift purchase.

Recommending a telescope is a difficult thing to do. Many times I've been asked through email, by people I have not met, but have mutual friends with. Not knowing exactly what one's interest level in astronomy and budget is, it's very hard to recommend a telescope. Thanks for taking the time to compile this list, and I will include it the next time I'm asked to recommend a telescope to a beginner.

Thanks Paulie - in fact, I see the question asked a lot in a number of different places. In a way, it was partly to avoid having to re-write the exact same things over and over again. I'll be able to copy/paste the link, say, "Read this first, if questions, ask" and save my fingers from carpal tunnel.

This will leave them more strength - and me more time - to devote for more important things. Like pie.
