It’s nearly time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge. Chicago Astronomers may be able to sight the 1.4-day-old Moon on 2012 MAR 23, while appearing as an unusual Lunar Boat, i.e. U-shaped.

For several days the Moon will appear in the vicinity of Venus and Jupiter. That should make for some fine photo opportunities.

Below is a photo that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Lunar Boat aged 32:47 hrs on 2009 MAR 27 at 19:53 CDT. It may appear similar for you on 2012 MAR 23.

I saw a U boat on three different incidents and each times just enough time to point but not shoot. Beautiful beautiful view but too bad can't capture it to compare the severeness of the U and what nice contrast of the U image showing craters on it ... will try again this evening.
