I plan to head over to Adler around 5pm this evening to volunteer.
With warm clean skies, last time to observe before year's end.

Can't wait to see Orion nebula and some open clusters tonite.

Took the wife and kids to Adler over Christmas break. Watched the Our Universe show in the downstairs theater narrated by Nick. My comment to him afterwards was that I had trouble finding many constellations with so many stars visible! I am used to having 30-40 stars to organize on a good night. I kept staring up at the roof of the theater trying to find Pegasus with no luck at all.

I can relate.

Conducting Chicago Astronomer star parties under the glow of the city, the brighter stars punch through and it's rather easy to make out the shapes.

But, on the rare times that I head out under darker skies, I get lost with all the additional stars...and need extra time to adjust and adapt. At the Adler, we have a presentation that shows the skyglow and reduction of visible stars from the city.

Did you have a chance to visit our darksky exhibit downstairs?

I can relate too. I took my family out to Yellowstone National park in 2009 and I couldn't have found the big dipper to save my life.

I just stared up at the Milky Way in wonder.
