Actual Solar Eclipse in the film "Barabbas"
A long time ago, I saw this film on regular tv, (at that time...it was all regular tv...
)...
...and was amazed at the solar eclipse. Later in my sordid life, I found out that great pains were made to capture this astronomical event on February 15, 1961 , and make it part of the movie.
I had forgotten about the name of the film, but always have shared this with Chicago Astronomer visitors when we discuss Solar eclipses.
Finally....I came across it...
Researching, it looked like a great swath across Europe was enjoyed...
For being 1960's film cameras, the photography in the movie isn't bad. They must have had to adjust the exposure manually as the lunar disk wiped across the solar path.
I think, with modern film equipment, that more movies should incorporate actual astronomical phenomena ...but perhaps CGI can do it better than the real thing?
