This Friday, June 10, Audrey Fischer, Larry Silvestri, and I will be presenting an astronomy program and telescope viewing in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The following dates and times are the nights we will be holding programs.


June 10 8:00pm - 11:00pm
July 8 8:00pm - 11:00pm
August 5 7:30pm - 10:30pm
September 2 7:00pm - 10:00pm


We will start each session at the Dorothy Buell Visitor Center just south of Rt 20 on Indiana 49 for a thirty minute presentation (on clear nights), then drive approximately 5 miles to an observation site at Kemil Beach. Maps from the visitor center to Kemil Beach will be provided. The visitor center can be found here:

For cloudy nights, we will have a 90 minute presentation at the visitor center, with no observing afterward.

You would be more than welcome. Rehearsing what I will be speaking about this Friday, I didn't do well. I should be working on my presentation, not posting on CA.

Duneland Astronomy has Rough Debut

Last Friday was supposed to be the debut of the Indiana National Lakeshore’s Duneland Astronomy sessions. Cloudy weather might have hampered interest, but Audrey Fischer, Larry Silvestri, Hillary, and I gathered at the Dunes visitor center to give our presentation. We met our park ranger for the event, Sarah, who had given planetarium programs at central Indiana’s Turkey Run State Park. (Turkey Run is an AMAZING park, and I want to go camping there again soon).

We were to begin at 8 PM, but we had no audience to present to. Given that it was our first time using the National Park’s computer and projection system, we decided to go ahead with our presentations, using this opportunity as a rehearsal.

Audrey gave a talk about light pollution, why it is a problem, and how we can address it. Larry gave a nice PowerPoint presentation about general astronomy, nicely tying things in with a timeline of the Indiana Dunes. I was the least prepared overall, and was further stymied when the park computer wouldn’t didn’t have a PDF reader installed. I talked about the June night sky, the Moon, and telescopes.

With this trial run, we can now go forward knowing exactly what to expect in July, and have pictures that can be sent out for promotion. I am not a natural public speaker, and should have been prepared, but I’m glad we had a Mulligan of sorts for our first session. Next month should be better, especially if we have a clear sky to show.

I was not prepared to give a top notch presentation, but appreciated a chance to rehearse without an audience. Next month will be better.
