The Quantrantids are brought to us from the comet
96P/Machholz. Name sound familiar? This meteor shower is named after the former constellation Quadrans Muralis; the radiant is in bootes.

Comet Machholz 1 was discovered in 1986 by California amateur astronomer Don Machholz. It travels on a 63-month long orbit, going from a distance of only 11 and a half million miles from the Sun (less than one-third the average distance of Mercury from the Sun) to 549 million miles from the Sun (further out than the planet Jupiter).

Although we have no direct measures of the size of Comet Machholz 1, comets with this level of activity are believed to be only a few miles across. This comet is currently bright enough that it would have been easily visible to the unaided eye, were it not so close to the Sun.

I don't believe I have ever observed the Quads. I understand that it's peak is quite short lived, about 1/2 day, but that the intensity is good.
