I'm wondering if #14 welders glass would work for viewing the Sun if you placed it over the end of a telescope?

I'm going to assume that your eyes would be fried out of your skull if you tried that.

Is there any cheap alternative to a Sun filter for telescopes?

Of course the safest way is to get your self an actual solar filter. It not only cuts down on the visible light, but also the related uv and infrared wavelengths.

Now, I have see others use the mylar Pop-Tart wrappers on the ends of binoculars, and I did manage a peek thru them. It seemed to work, but I wouldn't recommend them as protection.

I seem to like the projection method the best for solar viewing, and hook it up with a colored filter...it's the cheapest way to go and I think the most enjoyable.
