Chicago Astronomer Preparation Suggestions
I am thinking about the upcoming star party next month, and feel we need to start organizing our short observational session by Al's.
What we need to do - is to research what will be available to us to target in our scopes...old favorites, and possible new objects.
Example: Will there be any Iridium flares that night, satellites or other artificial targets we can catch? How about Comet Linear...is it still visible? Astronomy Mag says so, but I not too sure.
What about our time frame. I would assume that we will start at dusk, focusing on the summer triangle and picking out the brighter object first to get our orientaion, (at least us City Astronomers). Then proceed to the dimmer objects...including Messiers, NCG's and others. We could do a joint Messier check-off list, as many are unavailable to me here in the Heart of Chicago.
Closer to dawn, my favorite - Orion, will be peeking over the horizon, and along with it, many late fall and winter objects. Will our energy last the entire session? I certainly hope so. I will sleep upon returning home.
And lets discuss neccessary equipment and supplies. I hate to think I forgot something hours after I left for Woodstock. And travel logistics is also very important.
I will do research on what's available to us, and I would recommend that you all do the same. We can then compare our data, likes, wants and compile a nice organized list and session.
