Venus, Jupiter and the Moon Reunited Again

A good conjunction is building now in our western skies. The first part will be on the 1st of September, when Jupiter and Venus get very close. The next will occur on the 6th of September when the crescent Moon will join in on the gathering.

This description from Universe today:

(Aug 29, 2005) Once again, the sky is getting ready to put on a beautiful show - one that doesn't require particularly dark skies, a telescope, or lots of time to enjoy. Three of the brightest objects in the sky: Venus, Jupiter, and the Moon will gather close together over the next two weeks. Jupiter and Venus will reach their closest point on September 1, but on September 6, all three will be relatively clustered together. All you have to do to enjoy this spectacle is look to the West after sunset.

The Chicago Astronomers and Adler crew will assemble for the event on the 1st of September on the Adler grounds to enjoy the sight. We will set up around sunset, 8 pm-ish, and share views with the public.

We may also assemble for the three-way conjunction of Jupiter, Venus and Moon on the 6th. I will announce the plans and send out email notices as they are confirmed.

Late Update...

The weather will be good for catching the Jupiter Venus and Crescent Moon conjunction this evening. I will set up by my usual location by the Copernicus Statue right outside of the Adler, along with two other Chicago Astronomers.

I encourage all who have a few free moments to come on out and join us in the rare event...and it will be a great photo op. I plan in using my 35mm camera, (Are they still around?), as well as my digital.

Three way Conjunction and Three Astronomers...No Waiting

I was anticipating this cool event of the Moon joining in the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus. Parked at my usual spot by Copernicus, I meet up with Steve C, and set up my mass equipment. I had my scope, my video camera, my 35mm camera and digital camera. Thank goodness for a big trunk!

Here in the greenish glow of the artificial light bombarding us, I stand in defiance of Chicago light pollution, preparing for a night of observation.

Steve brought out his smaller scope, and it was well suited for catching the event. Since the grouping was so low near the horizon, detail was not good, but it was fun watching them.

Here, we take a moment to demonstrate that astronomers come in various sizes.

Our pal Hiram (Electriceye),joined us and brought out his cool classic 8" Screaming Orange Celestron. His finder mount came loose, and was not in service for this session.

Hiram just caught the deep orange moon going behind a building. I like the views thru his scope, as I think the images are clear, crisp and vibrant.

I have this monocular that I attach to one of my digital cameras, making it into a poorman's telephoto and showed Steve.

And near the end of our session, we took a pic of the meeting of astronomers.

This was a nice evening catching the trio move behind the Chicago skyline. Some passerbys took a peek thru our scopes, talked some astro talk and enjoyed ourselves.

That is a hell of an idea, and one I have seriously thought about...no kidding.

It would enable a mass exodus to darker skies with all my pals in tow. Maybe even down Texas way!

We would have green lasers guiding our way... ;D

An outstanding idea. Didn't Ken Kesey do this a while back. I forget. So do they.

I am aware of trailers towing very large scopes to public viewing events. That's way cool, but I don't know of any "Partridge Family" like buses filled with geeky astronomers...with an equipment bay in the rear. And what about a small dome peeking out of the roof!...


If any one knows of such an animal, please do post. It would be fun to know about.
