Fighting Spam posts on the Chicago Astronomer
Fellow Chicago Astronomers, Adler Crew
and Space monkeys...
Recently, The Chicago Astronomer Forum and other forums have been getting these annoying and strange looking posts, Chinese characters linking to MP3 sites and other unwanted spam trash have been posted on to the site, sometimes 10 or more at a time. I have been deleting them as soon as I can and blocking the IP numbers, but for those who are trying to read and reply to posts, it's quite aggravating. A few of you have written to complain.
I have now installed an anti-spambot code on the Forum. It only applies to GUESTS who wish to post a message, and requires them to type in a name, a security code and a validation code. Bots are too stupid to accomplish this task - and if human, not patient enough to complete - and will go on to the next site.
It is regrettable that I have to institute such measures, as I wanted this site open to all, but certain elements force a counteract of defense. If any of our members encounter any difficulties in accessing, reading or replying to posts, please let me know immediately! I have tested the code, and it works well. If you log on as a member (as you should be doing), this will not effect you in any way.
On a separate but similar matter...the server hosting my place holder site ( www.chicagoastronomer.com ), and many others, was hacked last week, and anti-war, Middle Eastern - hate propaganda militarists trash was pushed into place. Pretty gory images and threat to continue hacking unless we pull out of Iraq. The host has corrected the problem, and no permanent damage occurred...but really! No JiHad here.
Thank you for you patience in this spamming matter and if there are any other suggestions for improvement, please do let me know.
Respectfully,
Chicago Astronomer Joe
