After School Matters Space & Astronomy Spring Break "Biases & Obstacles" in Exploring Space

Our Chicago public schools closed for classes for Spring Break, but ASM fills in the gap with opportunities for teens to occupy their time and learn skills during this off time. Our Astronomy program offered classes in the biases, prejudices and obstacles in exploring space, both physically into the void and those who are held back by society or other barriers.

On our first day, we had veteran astro students and many new teens who were eager to participate. Since this was only a four day class, the lessons and discussions were centered specifically on around the topic stated. My class soon got comfortable and at ease, with my classroom welcoming and all geeked out on space stuff.

My students put their phones away during class, except for research. We discussed the early years of NASA with the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions...and why it took so long for a woman, African-American, Latino or LGBTQ for journey into space.  A special attention was given to the James Webb Telescope and why some want the name changed, due to Webb's stance against a certain group.
