Applications open for our Full Term After School Matters Spring Term Space & Astronomy Class
26 February to 11 May 2024

I am now accepting applications for our Full 10 week term of ASM Space & Astronomy for both In-Person and Remote classes.

Coming straight out of our successful two-week Immersion Spring Preview class, where we discussed the Biases in Space Exploration, we are now prepping for our classes of eager teens who desire to explore the cosmos in discussions, activities and team work.  Our teens earn a stipend to learn and will present their knowledge at the end of this term in a "Showcase" event, explaining various aspects such as plasma, rocketry, NASA missions and many other subjects.

But, teens are expected to perform in class, actively participating and contributing in classroom discussions, organize presentations and have fun learning, while growing in social skills and confidence.   Cell phones are not permitted during class, unless for research purposes.  Remote students who join via tablets, cell phones and computers are expected to maintain their cameras on during class.  Distractions and non-participation results in no-pay or dismissal.

There are hundreds that apply for my Astronomy class and because it is very popular, I accept the best candidates showing interest.   The first step is to write a short essay on why they enjoy all things Astronomical and the desire to join the astro crew.   Once I receive the essay, then I will schedule an interview and gauge the qualities this program demands.  Limited positions are reserved for the best teens from different backgrounds.  Some, who know practically nothing about space, but want to learn, to those who have a great knowledge and wish to learn more in a nurturing environment.  (Note: The Chicago Public School system is quite lacking in teaching Astronomy and related subjects.  My STEM program is the only fully dedicated Astronomy program in the city...and teens recognize this rare opportunity.)

I am currently interviewing and expect to hire great young minds, many who have come back for a 2nd, 3rd and even more times.  Onward to a great Spring term.

I receive such great essays from teens who desire a coveted a spot in my class.  I keep the essays for reference during my interviews and it's always wonderful to re-read the intros, many who will become strong students and within my circle of astro influence well into their college years and beyond.

Good afternoon Mr. Guzman,

I hope it isn't too late to submit my essay! I've been swamped with schoolwork and music rehearsals this week but I'm so excited to have the chance to rejoin the program. I look forward to chatting with you again if there are any more interview slots left.

I’m sure that after three terms with me, you know all about how much I enjoy learning about astronomy, cosmology, and all things space-related. No matter how many times I’m part of this program, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of marveling at the intricacies of space and the physics that tie us together with every single other molecule in the universe. Whether it’s learning about the history of telescopes here on Earth or the probes that have been sent deep into interstellar space, every lesson I’ve had in this class has given me something to explore on my own time.

When I reminisce on past programs though, my fondest memories are of the people I’ve met. Had I not first joined your class nearly a year ago, I never would have met Danny and David, who are two of my closest friends today. During the spring semester, creating Elisia with David and Camila was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my school year. Over the summer, building amazing models of the Artemis rocket and Orion capsule with people like Colin and Taniyah was stressful but the finished products ended up being so worth it. Then in the fall, I looked forward to watching clips of old sci-fi movies and speculating about extraterrestrial life with Rina and TK after a long school day. Each new class I join has a different dynamic, unique perspectives, and people who have all sorts of different interests and backgrounds in astronomy. I am grateful for the countless connections and opportunities that this program has afforded me, and no matter how many times I am privileged to be a part of this program, my passion for space and its mysteries will never waver.

Below is my essay for the Spring ASM Astronomy programs:

One of the best things I’ve done for myself this past year was joining the Fall ASM Astronomy crew. I came into the program knowing very little about astronomy (besides the occasional sci-fi movie scene) and came out a much more open and curious person. For the first time, I was able to talk to a teacher who embraced every question that came up. I would be unafraid to raise my hand and bounce ideas off of my classmates. I started asking questions about astronomy outside of class time and began developing a genuine interest in the topic.

But most importantly, this ASM program allowed me to make friends with my classmates who I never would’ve met otherwise. We all came from different neighborhoods and high schools, but that made the experience so much more enriching. We all had different perspectives and questions to bring to the table. If I am accepted into the Spring program, I will dedicate myself to contributing to a collaborative classroom environment and learning more about our universe!

Attached below is my short essay explaining why I would be honored to join this program. Thank you for the opportunity to express my passion.


My passion for astronomy was unparalleled when I grew up. When I was younger, I’d rant on and on about every space fact I had bundled up in my ever-expanding brain. Nowadays, astronomy is one of the careers I want to pursue and I’m trying to find programs to introduce me into it. Science has always been my strong suit in school, and I'd always have an A in my science classes because I was genuinely excited to learn about the world around me. Even after taking physics, anatomy & physiology, and environmental science classes, I've always had a stronger fascination with what's beyond my world, beyond Earth. I used to overload myself with the thought as a small creature, I would never truly fathom the weight and dimension of Earth, the Solar System, or even the galaxy. My fascination has only grown stronger, even when I didn't have anyone as committed as I was to discussing different theories, factoids, and fantasies. Currently, I am finding the French vocabulary for astronomy terms as I am enrolled in a French class that's heavily into writing journals, and what I talk about most is how I'm interested in the composition of stars, dark matter, and the theory of a white hole.

Though aliens have become very popular among the mainstream, I cannot help but constantly fantasize about them as an avid daydreamer as the music I daydream to is space-themed too. Because I am so passionate, I am not afraid to be proven wrong and only hope to learn from partaking in intellectual and entertaining conservations with people my age. This program will surround me with astronomy enthusiasts who are as dedicated as I am and can enjoy a shared topic together, a privilege I didn't have growing up. I am ever so excited to have this opportunity if I am granted the chance and engage with like-minded people who share the same love for astronomy as I do.

As a kid I was always interested in astronomy! I feel that it's a really awesome field that allows us to explore the universe. I have always been interested in constellations , specifically how close it ties into greek mythology. I also find the fact that there could possibly be other intelligent beings out there interesting. Joining a group like Astro Teens gives me an opportunity to learn and understand more about what's out there, and collaborate with other people who have a passion for astronomy. I would love the chance to make those connections and further my knowledge on something that is talked about so much yet we know so little.

I've always been curious about the universe.Astronomy allows people to explore and understand the unknown of the universe.Beginners like me are drawn to the mysteries of the universe and seek to unravel its secrets.I've even heard it often leads to inspiring discoveries about the nature of galaxies. Witnessing events like a meteor shower can be both thrilling and humbling.Astronomy provides an opportunity for stargazing, which can be a peaceful and a meditative activity. Observing objects like the Moon, planets, and stars with the naked eye or through a telescope can be a visually rewarding experience.Astronomy enthusiasts often find a sense of community among fellow stargazers and astronomers. There are local astronomy clubs, online forums, and events where a beginner like me can connect with others who share their passion. I'm Rachel I, an applicant for your Space & Astronomy program. As someone deeply rooted in the space outside our planet, I'm reaching out for the next step toward your program. To introduce myself, I'm an honor roll student who currently attends physics after many years of after-school STEAM and in-school science. Through 2021-2023, I indulged in FUSE learning (offered by the professional development organization "High Jump"), which provided enrichment and hands-on experiences in a multitude of sciences many times a week. Going through all of these STEM opportunities and activities, I kept finding myself more focused and interested in interacting with the worlds outside of our own.

With every circuit I constructed and every airplane I modeled, coded, or built, I had my eyes on practicing on the larger scale that is the universe. Discovering your program was a bright blinking message telling me that the very few stars in the night sky were not enough. Behind all the Chicago light pollution and in front of all the distance I can sense an ever-changing scene of infinite, orbiting worlds that constantly explode in plasma and release wonderful clouds of cosmetic alchemy. Although I've learned a lot from what the internet and my other experiences supply, I feel like your program and the tools it'll provide will allow me to peel away the layers of the night sky and find what blossoms infinitely around it. I'd love to be allowed to do this through what your application process requires next- whether interviews or whatever it is that's ahead!

I’m back:)! I came back because I really missed this program. I missed the long debates from the conflict over Martian grapes to whether we should leave lil Billy on earth. In my last essay I said I like astronomy because I’m curious, and astronomy is a deep ocean of unknown. This statement still stands. I was instantly intrigued, and drawn into the deep discussions we had in the winter session. I want to learn more. I want to continue the project on mars.

I want to continue to learn and understand the vastness of the universe and discover new things. The captivating never ends. I still have a lot of unasked questions. I also miss the welcoming presents of the class. You always say “there’s no such thing as a dumb question.” This program makes me feel at home, so if you let me, I wanna come back to learn more.

Mr. Guzman you already know me and you already know my love for space and astronomy. Ever since I got here, and got access to YouTube all I watched was space and astronomy. I distinctly remember when I was younger, my mom worked really close to our house. She would leave her phone for me to watch YouTube on for hours and the only thing nine year old me wanted to watch was videos about space, learning about UY Scuti the biggest star ever discovered. Then about the moon landing and its profound effect on our lives. This has cumulated in my love for science and your program helped that flourish. From learning about the reasons for the moon landing and debunking all the arguments that it was faked. I loved your program for the fact we could spend hours on arguments and bounce ideas off each other. Your program was one of the best I’ve ever been in and would love to be involved again.

I'd like to start off by saying I've been really into space since I was younger. I feel things like Star wars, Star trek, and other shows/movies that take place in space or on other planets molded my interest the most. My current biggest interests are black holes and super novas! I don't really know much about them but I'd really love to learn. I'm also open to learning about a variety of other subjects because I really just love to learn and discover new things. So when I saw this program I was super stoked!

I'm also have a huge love for character design. And a lot of my characters tend to revolve around a space theme. Sometimes they're based off actual planets, or maybe they have different things incorporated into their design! I'm not an astronomy expert or anything but I just really love space and how limitless it is. I find it amazing that as humans we've only discovered such little parts of it. I would really love to be part of this program and I'm pretty anxious when around people but nonetheless I'd be super happy to meet new people with similar interests!

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to join your ASM program. The last few programs I have done at ASM have been very art driven since that is a passion of mine but I am interested in expanding my horizons. Since I was a child I have always enjoyed learning about the planets and the stars, and outside of our own solar system. We learned about this topic briefly in middle school and I am excitedly waiting to take a course of Astronomy at my high school. Yet, I am hoping for a chance to learn a lot more about this subject in your program and if possible continue learning about the subject during the coming summer. I have been thinking about astronomy as a possible field of study along with my art education after high school. I follow a few instagram accounts that post about astronomy and the images they post are amazing. I see the beauty in what I consider “natural art” in those images so I think the artist in me is also drawn to want to know more. Astronomy and art define my life and everything we know to exist. There is so much we don’t know and that is what fascinates me. I hope that I am given a chance through your program.

I find myself fascinated by the sprawling 3D images on Google Earth, and could spend hours gazing at the details of different cities and landscapes on our planet. From city skyscrapers to acres of farmland, my curiosity has pushed me to want to learn more about the technology behind the simple act of clicking on a city and exploring it.

By participating in your Space and Astronomy program, I believe I will be able to learn more about our Earth, and possibly, the rest of our universe. Astronomy has always been my dream since 6th grade. I started getting interested because my dad always took photos of galaxies and nebulae. I read his books on astronomy and space and realized I enjoyed learning about how the universe works and what I can find in the universe. I set my career path to become an astrophysicist because I enjoyed learning about possible planets or galaxies harboring life, what dark matter is, and finding out how the universe works. I look up to astrophysicists such as Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Carl Sagan, and Stephen Hawking.

I’m Andrew L and I’m a junior at Whitney Young HS. I was a part of the ASM astronomy virtual class two summers ago. It had deepened my love for astronomy. I enjoyed the wonderful whole-class discussion instead of boring one-sided lectures. I got to build a beautiful community of fellow astronomers. I learned about many topics not often discussed, such as Lagrange points.
I aspire to be a physicist in the future, perhaps an astrophysicist.

I took AP Physics 1 this junior year and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was the perfect blend of math and science. I enjoyed physics because we strived to describe the world around us. So far, we are exploring the study of motion. I am particularly interested in future physics classes, where we will hopefully explore general relativity and quantum mechanics. I would love to learn more about the deep mysteries of our universe.

Thank you for considering me for the Virtual/Remote Astro Crew for the Spring 2024 Astronomy class. I must admit, while I don't have much knowledge about space currently, I'm incredibly intrigued by the idea of exploring the cosmos. I may not know much about astronomy but I still love astronomy and space since my childhood. Back then, the night sky held an irresistible image that I could stare at for hours. I would also spend countless hours in my backyard looking at the stars that I was able to see. And these things are what I would like to learn more about and be able to use a telescope to see even more stars and more things out in space to fulfill that curiosity my younger self always had. Joining ASM Astronomy


I want to be part of this program because ever since I had to make a model solar system in 6th grade, I’ve been very interested in learning more about the planets and stars. When I was younger, I always thought that the moon would follow me in the car to wherever I was going. I’ve always been a night owl, so I love sitting outside, just looking up to see the stars and the moon. I want to learn more about the different constellations that the stars form. I also want to learn more about the planets. I want to learn about what their environment is like, what kind of things can live on them, and whether they can see the stars from their point of view. I really just want to add on to what few things I know about space. I think this program would be very helpful for me to get to learn more about a topic that actually interests me. I hope that with this opportunity, I get to be more knowledgeable about astronomy and even share what I’ve learned with others.

I am Daisy Rodriguez and I'm applying to be in the ASM Astronomy In Person Program.

I am sending my essay in this email.

My interest in astronomy started with my interest in astrophysics . From there I begin to learn about different events that happen in the universe and how their position and motions are constantly changing. I’m familiar with all the planets in our solar system and I heard that I can see them from Chicago so that is one of the reasons why I am applying to this program. I also want to learn more about the planets because most of my classes only talk about them briefly and provide super surface level facts. I also try to research new discoveries of the universe by reading space related articles that I find on the internet. My social media is filled with astrophotos because it is intriguing to see something so big be captured in a single photo. I want to explore and understand how the universe creates and passes and how scientists study and interpret data to make accurate predictions about its behavior. I’ve been to the Adler planetarium recently as a way for me to explore more about astronomy and I’ve really liked what I learned about the Quadrantids meteor showers that happened in January and how Jupitar was the planet that we can see that month. It was one of the few events that I was able to explore and would like to get more exposure to more opportunities like that. I would like to get to know more about how to get good pictures of the sky so I can share the amazing things about the universe to other people.

Dear Mr. Guzman, I hope this letter finds you well. I'm writing to tell you why I'd love to join your program. Ever since I was a kid, I've been crazy about space. I used to bug everyone with space facts I had stored in my brain. Now, I want to turn that passion into a career. Science has always been my thing, and I've aced all my science classes because I genuinely enjoy learning about the world around me. But astronomy has always fascinated me the most. Even after taking physics, anatomy & physiology, and environmental science classes, I couldn't shake off my obsession with what's beyond Earth. Right now, I'm taking a French class, and I'm trying to learn the vocabulary related to astronomy.

I'm really interested in topics like star composition, dark matter, and the theory of white holes. I know aliens are trendy these days, but I've always been more into the science behind space. I love daydreaming about it, especially with space-themed music playing in the background. I'm not afraid to be proven wrong; I just want to learn from others who share my passion. That's why I'm excited about the chance to join your program. It would be amazing to be surrounded by people who love astronomy as much as I do and to have the opportunity to learn from them. Hi Mr. Guzman, my name is Shereese and I have recently recently grown an interest in space in astronomy, and I want to learn more about what’s outside of this earth. One thing I really wanna learn more about is extraterrestrial life because I believe life outside of planet earth is really amazing.

Throughout my childhood, I have always been fascinated with numerous fields of science and technology. I am in my junior year of high school and my passion for science and tech has remained unwavering. In fact, I got even more interested in those subjects now that I have been able to explore my passions in high school by taking classes on the same subjects that I used to enjoy watching YouTube videos about and chatting about them with my friends. When I was younger, I wanted to go into the game design industry after seeing all of the amazing games that were released and even playing them. That dream seems farther away from me in my current self, having taken a few computer science and programming classes during high school. Despite that, I still enjoy watching the occasional robotics and tech video online. In terms of science, I used to love topics like chemistry, biology, and geology. I still enjoy those topics, but I especially developed a fondness for chemistry after taking it in my sophomore year of high school. Nowadays, I find myself watching many NileRed and The Action Lab videos because of this. But, enough of my backstory. Let’s talk about astronomy.

Astronomy found me in a more interesting way than everything else. Alongside science and technology, I was quite an avid reader in my younger years and especially enjoyed books by Rick Riordan, which incorporated mythological beings into modern-day urban society. My favorite series of his focuses on Greek and Roman mythology, which also happened to have characters that shared names with the planets in our solar system. This grew into me also learning more about constellations and it was mind-blowing how some of them had stories in Greek and Roman mythology, which I thought was super cool. This was essentially what formally introduced me to the field of space and the cosmos, with a little guidance from the obligatory “I wanna be an astronaut!” phase that every childish science enthusiast goes through. I wasn’t able to take any classes on astronomy in school, but I satisfied my newfound passion for space with good old YouTube videos such as AstroKobi’s whole channel. While astronomy may have developed later as a personal interest, I would love to learn more about it and make up for lost time!

I would love the opportunity to participate in this program. I have always been obsessed with the earth,
stars, moon, and the Sun. I want to travel in outer space because I want to know if there is life on other
planets. Math and physics are two of my favorite subjects and that is because of astronomy. I have
always been curious about life and its origination. Our bodies are wonderfully made, and I don’t see
evolution as being responsible for that. I also believe in a greater being and would love to explore
beyond what I know. I am not sure what the class will touch on, but I would love to expand my
knowledge about astronomy. I know it also has to do with rocks minerals and motion as well and just

Hello, My name is Zahra, I'm not sure if you remember me but I did this program in the winter last year and I really enjoyed it. I loved the whole experience and was so sad when it came to an end. I thought there wouldn't be any more virtual astronomy programs and that made me really upset until I saw this opportunity and I wanted to join again. Last year I had so much fun and learned many things that I didn't even know were possible or even existed. I tried to further my knowledge of space on my own but it was not as fun as doing it when I was in this program. I really hope I can join again this year because it was one of my favorite classes.

My name is Abdurrahman Patel but I go by Abu. I am 18 years old and I’m a senior at Von Steuben. Last year when the time came to choose classes for my senior year, Von Steuben was introduced to an astronomy class for the first time. I was really excited when I heard about that from my teacher and had intended to take it if I could. As a kid I’d often look up into the night sky and always had been stunned by the beautiful sight of the stars and how beautiful the moon was even though it didn't have its own light. Sadly because of light pollution you are hardly able to see those stars now from the city. It is only darkness with the lonely presence of the moon.
I have always been amazed by how vast and mysterious space is. To think that this world we live in is in truth so small compared to the rest of the universe and even that isn’t the greatest thing there is out there never fails to amaze me every single time I think about it or see a video about it. Like, I get introduced to something and I think it is big just to find out it isn't even half the size of something else. And in some pictures you think what you’re looking at is small but when looked closely it is absolutely massive. At the same time I have kind of feared space too, black holes, cosmic radiation, asteroids etc. but I’ve always been very intrigued to learn about it all. I saw that astronomy class as an opportunity to learn, however in an attempt to seek as many AP/DC classes as possible and taking classes I needed to graduate I couldn’t get my hands on that class.

To add a religious side to this topic, my religion also had interested me about space. I am a Muslim and for example in a video I learned previously it was believed that the Earth was the center of the solar system/universe. And all the planets as well as the moon and the sun revolved around the Earth (geocentrism). Until the heliocentric theory was proposed saying the Sun was the center of the planets revolving around the sun. Then Kepler in 1609 said that not only do the planets revolve around the sun but they also rotate on their axis. Until recently it was believed that the sun however didn’t rotate in its own axis. However 1400 years ago in the Quran it was already mentioned in chapter 21 verse 33 “It is Allah who has created the night and the day, the sun and the moon, each one traveling in orbit with its own motion.” And now we know that even the sun rotates on its axis. And this absolutely shocked me. (VIDEO) Not only that but the Quran has some other verses which have intrigued me about space as well like how iron was sent down to Earth and it isn't a material from Earth (extraterrestrial metal). That it is material for war and many benefits for human beings. (57:25)

I first want to apologize for such the late essay, my life has been pretty busy lately with my college work, classes, as well as my life at home. However, I want to join your asm program because the concept of astronomy is something that ive always been fascinated in since I was a kid. my dad always tells me what happens out in space based off his findings on social media or google, and it always leaves me in astonishment and causes me to do further research. I've always wondered what the background behind the universe and everything else that revolves around space was, ever since my dad showed me his findings.

The idea that life is so much bigger, that there are other worlds, other galaxies, other universes, and other stars that are just waiting to be explored leaves me in awe. Additionally, the idea of being able to live on another planet than earth like mars or jupiter is very deep then it seems because we don't know what the temperature is or what the climate is we also don't know if there are extraterrestrials. Equally important, The idea that extraterrestrials that are portrayed in the movies could actually become reality really encaptures me to study and learn more about astronomy and I believe that your class is right for me.

I believe that by taking your class i'm going to find out more about the concept of astronomy and im going to have a strong community that is just as interested as me and were going to learn together, and most if not some of my lingering questions will be answered.

The astonishing beauty of the universe, the black hole, and the big bang theory amaze me and my younger self who used to lay on the rooftop at night to count stars. I've far been obsessed with the beauty of the universe. Looking at the night sky made me relieved me from the stress of the day and provided some sort of calm and peaceful energy. As someone from a country full of unpleasant events, danger, and misogynists, I found my safety and comfort up there. It looked like such a safe space away from all the harm and vile from this earth. Space is full of interesting, yet-to-discover objects. It's a place where humans have no control and is still functioning so beautifully.

The sunsets, night sky, and stars have a calm, silent beauty in them. It's so far away yet it satisfies something inside me. I think I’ve built such a strong connection with the sky ever since I was little. It started when I lost my grandma, I laid on the rooftop and pointed at the brightest star saying “that's her”. It was very common where I am from. The brightest star was to refer to the one we had to say goodbye to recently. It was a comfort to call a star someone I lost, and as I grew up I became more attached to those stars. I knew every night the star I say “it's her” is not the same one as yesterday yet, the comfort and warmth it brought inside me convinced me to keep believing that. The comfort the sky gave me, became a reason I went to sleep on the rooftops just to look through the stars.

After I moved to America, I was unable to do that because of the house structure, and apartments never have rooftops. I also realized that stars aren't really visible here due to light pollution. But that comfort was now me watching sunsets. I live near the lake so oftentimes when I’m stressed out, I go by there and watch the waves calmly flow by me.

Hello! My name is Jane’t M, I'm a 14 year old freshman girl who goes to Michele Clark, and in this essay I will be talking about why I should be in this program!

Ever since I was younger I had an interest in stars and the universe. I would check out books from my local library about space and the solar system, watch youtube videos about it for hours on end, and even buy a telescope so I could stare at the stars at night. Not only that, but my family also has a love for the stars, so they would teach me about the constellations Back then I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in life, so my love for the cosmos was mostly just an innocent hobby.

As I got older, I started looking at the history of the space race and people who shared my same interest in the stars, idolizing people like Mae Jemison, Harvey Banks, and many more. Around this time, I started looking into astronomy more, and started leaning more towards it as a future career path I wanted to take. I started looking more into celestial bodies outside of our solar system, such as galaxies, black holes, quasars, gamma rays, you name it! I fell in love with the universe and everything in it, and felt a desire to learn more about it and to understand it better.

Fast forward to the present, and my love for the universe is at an all time high! I love everything about it: The vastness of it, the beauty in it, and even the fascinatingly dangerous qualities of it. I want nothing more than to understand it as much as I can, and to study it more so I can maybe even learn something new about it. It’s become my lifelong dream, something I'd be content with doing until the day I die. That's why I want to join this program! If there's anything I want to do right now, it’s to learn! I want to be taught about the math and the science behind our universe, and to get a head start on it before I head to college so I have a better chance of achieving my dream!

I'm a fan of black-holes. I sometimes think there is more to a black-holes than just destroying other plants. The study of stars has always found a way to intrigue me. Something about stars has me in a trance. The way they look is just so captivating. Their beauty is like nothing before. The way they form the constellations such as the Little Dipper, Orion, and other such constellations have always made me look up at the dark sky. Although I may not have as much knowledge as others that have joined this said program, I would absolutely love to learn all sorts of things relating to Astronomy. Unfortunately, I don't know about many constellations, yet I am always up to learn more about them and their origin if I ever get the chance. I have visited the planetarium a few times when I was younger, and there was always something about the way they held the sky shows that lured me into wanting to know more about them (the planets and everything else as well).

When I was younger, I remember seeing the stars for the first time. They twinkled just like how jellyfish under water do. They were absolutely beautiful. At that moment, I never wanted to take my eyes off of them. Ever since then, I have always wanted to gain more knowledge on stars and everything that has something to do with space.

1st Day of In-Person Astronomy & Space class at ASM

Monday was our first day of Space & Astronomy Spring Term class at ASM.

These young men and women earned their positions in my class out of hundreds that applied and are eager to start exploring the cosmos together. At the end of our first class, teens started to get comfortable and laugh, beginning to get to know each other. Most are new to the program, but I do have several returns...one young man making this his fifth time with me.



One team exercise was to select a pic from their cell phones and associated it with something spacey....and they all did with illustrative explanation's. Good job.

We have 10 weeks together to explore the cosmos and connect to the Universe.

1st week of ASM Space & Astronomy In-Person class

We have a solid crew for this Spring term of Astronomy, with teens working together well and making this nerdy classroom their own.

I polled the crew on our first day, on what topics are of interest to discuss, and one of them was "Exo-Biology". I then assigned random celestial bodies to teams and after a brief research, the teens came up with lifeforms that may exist in such environments. But first an old favorite, How much space is there in our solar system or is like the neat evenly spaced orbits that school erroneously teach.

Using register tapes, we plot out the planets, first by where they think the planets may be, then actually to this this scale. Astro students are always amazed that the rocky planets are quite bunched together and the gas giants are very very spaced apart...

With that basic understanding of distances from the Sun, students started to assemble their data and present their finding and postulations to the class....

       

                

I was impressed that on their first week together, that such theories were presented, discussed and enjoyed by all on their first team project.  We will go in depth into Astrobiology later on in the term.

A goal of my program is to have students build self-confidence and expand their shells of comfort while learning all things space and this includes team work exercises.  This perpetual favorite is working together to raise a clear tube off the floor with just two fingers, keeping a sphere centered and level for a count of 10.  Not easy, but it build communication and cooperation...

  

I also delivered a telescope to my class, donated by a very generous Chicago Astronomer fan and many teens will enjoy learning to operated this instrument for a long time.  More on this when we go into optical astronomy.

      

A very solid first week for my In-Person teens.   

        

We have 9 weeks together now in the only fully dedicated Astronomy program in the city.  But tonight is the start in my Remote/Virtual ASM Astronomy students and a whole new adventure with teens who could not attend in person.

ASM Space & Astronomy 1st Spring "Remote" Class

Not only do I teach Astronomy In-Person at our Downtown classroom, but also attend to space teens remotely, for those that cannot attend due to school schedules, transportation or other barriers. We at ASM started virtual classes when COVID hit in 2020 and it has been a success from our first remote class onward. I wasn't too sure if virtual learning would be a viable manner to teach about space, (after all, I enjoy the vibe of an actual classroom), but all my students love astronomy and want to be here and indulge in all things space...and ergo...we have a great time with our laptops, phones & tablets after all these years.  The only dedicated remote Astronomy program in the city.

This day had us introduce ourselves, asking questions and working out the technical issues, but all my teens keep their cameras on during class, something of a rarity I understand. Also, cell phones are put away and distractions kept to a minimum. My astro students contributed to discussions with what they would like to learn in our 10 weeks together and that lead to the start of brief lessons and discussions, to be examined in depth at a later date.  We went past our class end time as we were engrossed in the subjects, but we do that often.

This remote class meets on Thursdays & Fridays from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm and a long wait-list to get in.  I am maximum capacity currently as this ASM Astronomy program is quite popular, for both In-Person and Remote options, with hundreds of applicants for limited positions.
