The newcomer: an opportunity to restudy comets

An astronomer show to me the most recent image that he picked, and said to me: "The comet is not oblong; it is spherical; see this image! It is not flaming as you said!"
I answered him:
In case the object is far away and flaming, it will appear like this. And in case, the picture of this object is in profile, it will appear like this.
It is Astronomers that say that the comet is not spherical.

May I ask: what distance (away from the sun) is required so that the dirty ice will boil [as you claim]? And will the ice on its surface melt, before its central ice?

Moreover, if it is not a flaming object, then what will make such a relatively small inert object appear so luminous from such far distance?

That link has a heavy religious component to it. Here in the west we have people who also wish to convince others of their religious views. The protestant evangelicals come to mind, but of course, there are other such groups. Most of the people here at the Chicago Astronomer separate religion from science because there can be unreconcilable differences if we do not. While being a person myself who believes in the existence of God, I think of religion as telling us who created the universe, with science saying how He did it.

The questions you ask focuses on how He did it. With your flaming comet, you object that if you had a different view of the comet, then it would give different information. We do not have this other view, so there is no way to falsify your statement. Science does not prove anything. Instead, it attempts to disprove, and in failing to do so, makes the idea stronger. We are unable to perform a flaming comet test that might disprove your idea because we do not see the comet close up. If we could see the comet close up, then we could look to see if it were flaming and oblong. If it were not spherical or burning, then it would disprove your idea, making the other interpretation stronger. If instead it showed a flaming oblong object, then it would disprove the claim that comets must be spherical and lit by an external source. You assertion would then be stronger. The observation would prove neither, but it would make one or the other stronger.

Without the observation, we are unable to use science to decide how He did it. We must instead decide what we believe according to whatever flavor of religion we choose.

I can appreciate Eanassir's thoughts on this, but religion often has the opposite effect on science...to just accept what is written on blind faith. Which we all have learned has kept mankind in the dark for so long.

Religion instead of science is poor logic, but belief along with science exploration is cool.

A flaming comet is what the ancients might have described the object...in terms they only knew how to describe.

Science builds he modern world. The ancient Greeks and Romans used it too, which resulted in stunning accomplishments. Then religion got into the picture, and set civilization back and delayed progress perhaps 1,500 years. Religion says to believe what someone else tells you; do not look or think for yourself.

The religious zealots can say, “You gotta believe”, but I believe that Bob has returned and did not fall off the edge of the world as religion tells us he must. Bob was a sailor on the ship of Fernao de Magalhaes, which left Lisbon sailing to the West, on September 20, 1519 with 265 men in five leaky ships. Three years later, Bob and seventeen other men returned from the East on one lone ship. Magellan himself had died in the Spice Islands, the Philippines, but not before crossing 124th line of East longitude where the Portuguese nine years earlier had arrived from the west. When Bob walked into Lisbon, he drove a stake through the heart of religion’s death grip on progress.

Today any person can look through Galileo’s telescope and see for himself. Any even inexpensive scope shows the moons circling Jupiter. It shows Venus which gets larger and then smaller as it swings around the Sun in coordination with phases. It shows the planets as discs, not just points of light. It shows spots that move across the face of the Sun. It shows thousands of previously undetected stars in the Milky Way. It shows the rings of Saturn. It shows the mountains of the Moon. Religion says that all these things cannot be. Look for yourself and decide whether the religious zealots have it figured out.

I agree.

Fundamentalists and zealots are quite dangerous, hypocritical and anti-progressive.

Seems that anything that may challenge a belief is deemed heresy and dismissed as a diversion from faith by Satan or whatever. But those with an open mind, who do believe in a higher being, see new developementsand discoveries as opening new vistas for understanding and a deeper appreciation of their environment.

Religion should never be an obsticle to learning.

APOD is running a story today about the comet. Interestingly, they make a comment that bears on the possible oblong shape of the bright central region.

I also remembered that the comet was supposed to have suddenly brightened a million times. Since the coma is now 1.4 million kilometers across, and the nucleus is only 3.4 kilometers, the size ratio squared is about 170 billion. This made me realize that I do not know what the original size of the coma was before the comet brightened.

The true original religion of God as found in the Torah revealed to Moses (Most of it is included in the Old Testament), and in the Gospel revealed to Jesus as well as in the Quran revealed to Mohammed. This is different from the traditions narrated by various sects.
The mistake of the church was that they adopted the teachings of Ptolemy (: one of the ancient Greek scientists) who said the earth is the centre of the universe and that the sun circles around it, while God did not say that; it was Ptolemy who said it.

I agree with you Joe, and I add that the Glorious Quran encourages the investigation and exploration of the universe.
• I may give as an example: the Moon which has an important role in letting people understand the counting, arithmetic and the timing; because of the different phases of Moon; if there had been only one phase they would not have been alert about the time. God – be glorified – said in the Quran 10: 5

Could you post simple statements backing up the passages in the Torah regarding the astronomical details?

I am particulaly interested in the Ptolemy influence.

After investigating the contents of the sample from the Deep Impact, they found:
1. Spitzer detected specific colors of infrared light that indicated that Tempel 1 contained clays and carbonates, the minerals of limestone and seashells.
