Fellow Chicago Astronomers...
The astro calendar busy with events and the next one might be of interest to the crew.
On Friday, the 27th of January, Saturn will buzz the Beehive cluster (M44) and make a nice wide-field telescopic event to observe.
This from Chicago Astronomer Curt (Centaur):
Saturn will reach opposition to the Sun in ecliptical longitude on 2006 JAN 27 at 23 hr UT. It will appear at stellar magnitude –0.2, while its axis will be tilted by –18.9° to the perpendicular of the line of sight and its rings slanted accordingly. The planet will reach a minimum of 8.12684 AU or 1.216 billion km from Earth when it will appear to have an equatorial angular diameter of 20.51 arcseconds.
As viewed geocentrically on 2006 FEB 04 at 03:33 UT, Saturn will be retrogressing to the south of Mag 6.3 Epsilon Cancri (the brightest of the Beehive cluster – M44) at an angular separation of only 52.2 arcminutes.
I’ve created a graphic demonstrating its entire opposition loop, appearance at opposition and triple conjunction with the Beehive.

If the skies are clear, the Chicago Astronomer crew might consider a get together. The event occurs at 2300Hrs UT (5:00 pm Chicago Time), and I think I'll set up by the Adler for the session. Not necessarily an intricate and precise type of event, so it should enable us to capture views of other celestial objects as well. Perhaps Bill and Arvind will conduct another joint session with laptop and new Tak scope.
Here Chicago Astronomers Bill, Linda and Arvind pose last Saturday for an impromptu session by the Adler.
Pictured with the crew is Bill's brand New Takahashi telescope. Quite cool and sweet!

Also...
Watch for the last minute details in your mailboxes on Tuesday for our special pre-screening of "Roving Mars" for Thursday evening.
See all soon.
