Saturday 13 August 2016
7:30 pm till 12:00 am
Join the Chicago Astronomer crew in sharing the night sky with Northerly Island visitors for our annual Perseid Meteor shower observation session. This will be our third year in sharing the cosmos with our friends at Northerly Island for the Perseids...
As of 05 August 2016
Check out the Perseid Meteor Shower Facebook Page here:
Dig those numbers - over 1000 going!!!
Not to missed....

One can easily observe brighter meteors as they ionize high above. Darker sites are best for the fainter meteors, but Northerly Island is the perfect locale for catching meteor streaks over the darkened lake and over our city. Even with a Moon out, higher illuminescent meteor streaks are still visible to the naked eye...
At one Chicago Astronomer gathering for the Persieds, the crew caught over 55 bright meteor streaks...!
We will set-up many telescopes for our Northerly Island visitors and will have FIVE planets to share - Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Saturn & Mercury - toss in the near full Moon and meteors...and what we have is a great night for urban Astronomy...
We will be ready to attend to our fans by 8:00 pm and will Northerly Island will remain open at a special late time of 12:00 am (Midnight) for our guests.
Join urban sky lovers at Chicago's front yard for this very special astronomical event in our city.

The Perseids are left over grains from Comet Swift-Tuttle, ionizing high in the atmosphere at 37 miles per second... as the Earth passes through the debris field as the comet's core orbits the Sun every 33 years...
This year, it is predicted that instead of seeing about 80 Perseids per hour, the rate could top 150 and even approach 200 meteors per hour. The last dense outburst was in 2009.
