Brand new Bright Nova in Delphinus

Just yesterday, something new was discovered by a citizen astronomer using a 7" Reflector in Japan... one of the most light polluted regions of the world.

A Nova has been discovered...and pretty bright too!

Blazing at magnitude 6.8, it is just under naked eye visibility and should be an easy target in Chicago Astronomer telescopes and even in binoculars.

I will attempt to target this Nova during our Chicago Astronomer Star Party this evening from our observation site by the Adler Planetarium building.

This is a rare event and all that are able to, should view this fleeting moment in a Star's life...as it dies and returns it's matter back into space.

Gotta wonder....how many civilizations did it take with it?

Here is a nice image capture of the Nova...

It'll make for a good FOV comparison and the photographer has done a great job.

I will make an attempt to observe and image from under the light dome of Chicago...

Went looking for this last night..........unsuccessfully. I would have seen it had I come here first. The graphic above is the best locator I have seen so far. I probably saw it and didn't recognize it; As my CG5GT is out for repair, (and soon to be replaced with a Skywatcher EQ6) I set up my Meade 90 on my Autostar mount and sent it to NGC 6905, so, with a 40mm plossl, the nova was probably in the FOV. Of course, the full moon was shining directly in my eyes. perhaps I'll try again this evening, now that I have a closer idea where it is.

None of the posts I have seen mention that it is close to NGC 6905. One would think that, or a mention of the closest star, would be a good way for interested astronomers to find it.

If you are GoTo, punch in SAO 088693 Mag 6.43. The brighter object just to its right is the nova.

It is the brightest object in that neighborhood, even via binocs.
