September 16, I managed to image Jupiter for the first time. I placed the camera w/adapter inside my 2x barlow. Therefore, with my 26.8mm diagonal sensor, the magnification is 56x. I captured a 4 min movie of Jupiter. I used the digital zoom feature of the camera to enlarge the image. I think I may have gotten too greedy with the 5x zoom. I'll try 3x zoom the next time. Then converted the .mov file to .avi with Canon's ZoomBrowser software. I aligned and stacked in Registax. Then atempted to post-process in Canon's Digital Professional and Gimp; not knowing at all what I'm doing in either, but gave it a shot.

I like it.

But, try not to use the Digital zoom, instead keep with the optical - for sharper imaging.

Jupiter will only get better as the season progresses.

I agree with the digital zoom, however Jupiter is so small with a DSLR. I'm already considering getting a 5x Barlow which should give me 140x mag with my 26.8 diag camera sensor. My scope's focal length is 750mm.

I mean, how are you attaching things to the scope to capture images?

I used the prime focus method. I have a t-ring connected to my Canon T3i body. The adapter is connected to the t-ring. Meanwhile, my 2x barlow is in the scope eyepiece holder and the camera with adapter goes into the barlow. I have a manual EQ mount with a RA motor drive for tracking.

I'm a afocal fan myself.

In such a set-up, one can better control the magnification and capture larger images on brighter subjects, (Moon and planets) - but with all that extra glass - images are softer.

Prime focus is better on dimmer/wide-field objects and sharper.

Both work well and should be used alternatively.
