Full Moon Rise party

It's been a very long time since the Chicago Astronomers set-up telescopes to enjoy the Full Moon rise over the Lake Michigan Horizon.

After requests for some time, it's time to change this.

Moon Rise will be close to 7:30 pm and I will arrive on-site at 6:30 pm with the mighty C11 Beast...perhaps even do some solar viewing for our fans, friends and visitors. Then, let's see who's first in spotting the lunar orb rise. We will also enjoy some Saturn views and other celestial delights...all from Chicago's front yard.

We will not be at our usual telescope spot, but instead...just south of the Adler Planetarium's building at the "Galaxy Rocks". This month's Moon is called a "Strugeon" Moon and will rise at 7:37 pm.

The weather forecast is calling for a great warm summer day and night, with clear skies. Bring some eats, drinks, (no booze) and have a great time with Chicago Astronomers.

I should be there after I pop into the Illiana Tollway meeting. It's starts at 5 PM, and all I have to do is make an appearance, and voice my concerns. I should be in the city in plenty of time for Moonrise, and hopefully early enough to do some meaningful solar observing.

A Sturgeon Full Moon Rise Success

Heading over to the Full Moon Observation site, the expressway leading to the area was packed - Lollapalooza was in town.

Ugh...

All Astronomers managed to arrive and secure parking, setting up before the 7:37 pm rise...

Astronomers for this event will be C.A. Rich, Paulie and myself...with Maria in support crew mode.

Rich was already set-up and doing solar viewing with his off-axis filter and a crows was gathering to photograph and engage in the Astronomers...

Several Adler Telescope facilitators joined us - coming from a training session at the Doane Observatory ans stayed with us for awhile. With a clear sky and warm temps, we will have a great comfortable lunar session.

Haze along the horizon obscured the actual rise time, but eventually the Moon punched through the muck...

Attaching the camera to the 90mm...

Transferring over to the C11, I used my new MaxViewII Eyepiece in it's first actual practical use...

Switching to Tungsten white balance, the orange moon transformed to a natural silvery tone...

There is a slight darker center obstruction spot from the secondary, but slight adjustments handles it.

And our visitors enjoy scope time...

We also target Saturn for a bit, but she is sinking fast in the west now...

Seems that Lollapalooza is testing out spot lights this evening...ugh... But Saturn still delights our visitors, even if it's rather soft now.
