I bought a Kindle on Wednesday. It's the base version of the latest generation.
So far I am happy with it. There are only a couple things I think should be changed, but I'll probably get used to them. It does what it is supposed to do and it does it very well.
I have been searching for astronomy books to put on it an it has been an interesting search.
I'll start with this collection of books that are available online for free. The list contains electronic books in several flavors some are compatible with the Kindle and others are not. It has a lot of books and a lot of them are really old. Do you want an edition of Tycho Brahe's "De nova et nullius aevi memoria prius visa stella"? In Latin? It's available.

Go to the Kindle Store and search for Astronomy.
Here is a link to the search results.
Now for the fun part. Change the sort to "Price: High to Low". Make sure you are sitting down first. $3,096.80
And far as I can tell, it really isn't about astronomy.
The next cheapest is $375.20. I went through the list up to page 25 before I got to an ebook under $100.00! If you sort the list the other way, you will find that there tons that are free as well.
What I haven't found yet is a general star atlas.
