Hands On Lab – Planetary Imaging

We talk about what equipments are needed for planetary imagings, such as the types of telescope and camera/ccd/sensor pixel. Then a little bit about what types of imaging and processing technique to use. That's it. We are done! All done!!

However, there is a little quiz like thing so to make sure everyone can operate the observatory/lab equipments and handle the scopes by themself. This is mainly for safety issue with the automatic/robotic movement of the pier mounted scopes (one tele-pier) and retractable roofs. This has taken more time than expected because everyone has to take a turn so we did not do any imaging.

And . . . this is your quiz. Why do we wait until the final class to do planetary imaging?

Because Chris didn't have the proper driver installed for the planetary camera software?

I don't doubt it's a legitimate quiz. I just don't have a legitimate answer... and it's my nature to be the class clown.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but you guys would have done some lunar imaging if it hadn't been for the driver snafu.

There wasn't enough time during class period so officially we would not have done it. If we had time we could have done it with many other cameras that were available. Classmate Tim and I wanted to see how that small pixel camera would work since the roof is still off so that was like a side thing and I cannot complaint. That is also why you see Ralph, another classmate, down in the circle doing his own things.

Ah.

I still can't think of a good reason why planetary imaging would wait until the last session. Most astronomers start with lunar and planetary observing, because they're easy targets. The same applies when moving on to imaging.
