I've been following news articles relating to Nibiru the past few weeks. There seems to be evidence both pro and con not only the existence of this planet, but if it is about to pass through our solar system within the next year or two. In addition, I have been reading about some strange astronomical things occurring lately. One of these events is the arrival of the sun two days early in Greenland (http://tinyurl.com/4gjaoda). The other is the increase in solar activity that although expected, is being said to become 20 times more intense than what we are used to. Some are saying that the SPT (on the South Pole) telescope is following the planet to the south.

I'd like to know the opinion of the people of this forum.

Welcome to Chicago Astronomer. As far as the Nibiru that I've been hearing about for the last year or so, it does not exist. If it was to come through the inner solar system next year, it would already be well within the orbit of Jupiter. Since it is supposedly much more massive than Jupiter, if it has any reflectivity at all, it would be brighter than Jupiter, which is brighter than every celestial object we see other than the Sun, Moon, and Venus. It would stand out incredibly in the night sky, would be getting slightly brighter every day, and noticeably brighter every few weeks. It would be obvious to anybody who regularly watches the night sky.

Any astronomer who discovered such a planet (and discovery would have happened a few years ago) would be world renowned, yet nobody has claimed to have found it. But oh, wait. There is a conspiracy to keep Nibiru a secret, and anyway, it's only visible in the southern sky. I'm still not buying it. There are too many telescopes, and capable astronomers using them in the southern hemisphere. Case in point, Anthony Wesley of Australia. Wesley has made or confirmed every major discovery on Jupiter in recent years. Late last year he was the first to image a new storm on Saturn, even though NASA has the Cassini spacecraft orbiting the Saturnian system. If Nibiru was visible in the southern hemisphere, Wesley and others would no doubt be posting very high quality images of it, along with the coordinates to find it, so that other astronomers could confirm the discovery. Also, any object as massive as Nibiru is reputed to be would be perturbing orbits, which I have not heard of, and would have a significant infrared signature. Quite a few amateur astronomers would be capable of picking up the heat signature, though it would be more difficult than visual confirmation.


I did see a story earlier this week about a possible planet far off in the outer solar system. A friend forwarded the story to me on Facebook, and asked my opinion of it. Below is my response to her, copied and pasted, including the link to the story.

I've heard all kinds of hair-brained hypotheses lately, usually connected to the supposed planet Nibiru which is supposed to cause the demise of Earth. I don't think this falls into that category.

I looked up the WISE mission overview.

If in fact there is something there, WISE will find it, but I don't expect that information to be released for at least another year, in February or March of 2012. Planetary scientists are almost certain that any large body (or even anything as large as Earth) could not form so far from the Sun, so if out there, Tyche would have been captured into orbit by the Sun.

The only reason I think Tyche could possibly be out there is because I had no idea there were so many comets coming into the inner solar system than can otherwise be explained by conventional theory. Tyche, for now, has to be considered a possible explanation, but when the full WISE data is released, it will either be confirmed or dismissed.

My own thought for the IAU: even if Tyche is confirmed, it should not be counted as a planet in our solar system, since it did not form here.



I hadn't heard the Greenland story before, and don't know much about it, so I won't speculate what the cause might be.

I've been paying a little bit of attention to solar activity, though, mostly through NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory Facebook page, but also through the SDO mission page on sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/
I've also been directly observing sunspot activity, and in the last two weeks, it has indeed picked up. The coronal mass ejection earlier this weeks was the strongest in four years, and maybe this will turn out to be a very intense Sun cycle, but I think it's too early to say. Sunspots have only been studied for four centuries, with their magnetic nature only uncovered about 100 years ago. Multi-wavelength observations of the Sun only go back a few decades, basically to Skylab. For a star with a lifetime of around 10 billion years, I don't think we have been observing long enough to say what is "normal" over a solar cycle. Even if Solar Cycle 24 becomes the most intense Sun cycle recorded, we may find out that it falls well within parameters for what physicists expect to be going on. That's my uneducated opinion. The unknown aspects of solar activity are what got me following the SDO mission, and pointing my own modest solar-dedicated telescope to see our star in action, and try to figure out what's going on.

Welcome to the discussion group, kenroar. It was wise of you to come to a somewhat more scientific website, rather than one of those woo woo sites loaded with crackpots who make up nonsense that is devoured and further spread by their credulous readers.

Please provide us with your evidence regarding a hypothetical planet that you call Nibiru. Professional and amateur astronomers worldwide know nothing about it. We are not involved in any massive worldwide conspiracy to hide the truth. Astronomers seek the truth, we do not hide it. There is no worldwide or individual government that could force us all to hide the truth. Governments would have no reason to want to keep secret the discovery of a planet, and neither do astronomers. In fact, those who run NASA are desperate to keep receiving a high level of government funding, and love to promote any discovery that will excite taxpayers and have them writing their congressmen to be sure money is kept flowing to NASA.

As Paulie noted, there are unsubstantiated conjectures about a distant planet in the Oort cloud. If it really exists and is in a highly eccentric orbit, it would take hundreds of thousands of years to come to our vicinity. Most astronomers doubt its existence.

Comets and asteroids are continually coming by us. Major hits are tens of millions of years apart. Yes, there is reason to always be on the alert for them. Currently astronomers are very actively searching for those not yet discovered. None of any dangerous size is likely to hit us soon, especially not as soon as 2012.

The seemingly early Greenland sunrise is related to variances in the degree to which light is refracted by the atmosphere. Temperature and humidity are huge factors. Any celestial body near the horizon appears higher than it actually is. The amount by which it appears raised depends on the atmospheric conditions that day. Occasionally the difference and its effects can seem rather dramatic. This is especially true within the polar circles where rising celestial bodies intersect the horizon at a sharp slant.

The cycle of changes in solar activity is perfectly normal. We recently went through the phase of minimum activity in the roughly eleven-year cycle. Now the Sun has again become more active.

Any telescope located south of the equator can see all of the sky in the southern celestial hemisphere during any 24-hour period. Those of us in the north always see some portion of the southern skies. A telescope located at the South Pole sees nothing but the southern celestial hemisphere. A large number of astronomers from many different academic institutions in various nations rotate duties there. They could not collectively keep a secret, and have no reason to.

Unfortunately, there are people out there who will misinterpret anything, often intentionally, to scare people into buying their books or the products of sponsors of their broadcasts or websites. As was said in “The Wizard of Oz”, Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

I came to a site like this on a whim. I am one of those called a "nut-job" that sincerely believe that as a world, we are right on the verge of God's wrath. Amidst the many many time clues that prove that May 21 is verses the ushering in of that great and terrible day of the Lord, there is verbiage indicating that there would be signs in the sun, the moon and the stars..." as I recall and it seems to indicate that such would also have men's hearts failing them for fear as they realize what they are seeing. I have seen no Biblical support for any absolute doctrine concerning a literal understanding of this nor have I on the other hand seen that which proves to my satisfaction an entirely spiritual understanding of the passages either. I know the Bible teaches that although evil mankind WANTS a miraculous sign of some sort, so that THEN they could begin to trust the Bible, NO such sign would be given. HOWEVER I do not discount the possibility that a sign could be given in a way that scientifically does not prove anything regarding Scripture but COULD yet scare the pants off astronomer types. So here I am on my whim reading posts just to see if anything is beginning to show up in these regards ...comments anyone? Also some of you may be interested in the latest thinking regarding How the world might experience Christ's return in a "rolling" fashion, beginning at one longitudinal point and then continuing in some sort of linear fashion so that withing 24 hours ALL the inhabitants of this planet will have experienced the same awesome event yet ALL on the same date commencing May 21. It has been shown that every inhabited land mass could be involved on their own adjusted calendar date. In addition to my interest concerning signs so great that hearts are failing, I also have the same sincere desire to warn my telescopically focused friends about Christ's judgment with the same zeal I have with all other folks. I could be though that you all will be the first ones to notice something spectacular. That COULD be but remember, by then it would also be too late for you individually I am afraid because it sure looks like God has no intention of giving an individual proof as a means to change their heart! The worry needs to be for the message of judgment! The only right illustration given by the Bible is where people respond to the words with fear and humility begging God for mercy even as it is realized that I am undeserving altogether. Salvation well may be a 70:1 possibility for each person but we find none being saved in their pride! So from strictly a number crunching point of view alone, A person who has repented of their pride, approaching God in total humility has mathematically wonderful hope of salvation simply because God is adamant that He resists the proud but is graceful to those of a meek, humble nature ...pleading that God MIGHT save me in spite of my sin! Contrary to all religions today (no matter how subtle some are) there is NO recipe for salvation, PERIOD! There is NOTHING any person can DO, or say that can guarantee God's amazing salvation! He has to do it all from start to finish as we see in Ezekiel 36 for example starting at the verse with Him saying something to the effect "I will take you from among the nations, I will sprinkle you with clean water, a new heart will I give you etc etc. Thanks for allowing me to speak here and for that even I would that the Lord richly bless you even with the very BEST things!
