Someday, those of us who are responsible, mature users of green lasers are going to see our tools banned due to incompetent boobs who think it's freakin' hilarious to shine a laser in someone's eyes. I'm willing to bet most of these incidents are punk teens with nothing better to do. The same kind of punk teens who think it's funny to hit my mailbox with a bat, destroy/deface public property, spray paint buildings, drive insanely fast through residential neighborhoods with someone sitting on the hood or standing in the sunroof, drive through lawns trying to leave tire tracks, text throughout a movie at the theater, and shine lasers on the movie screen.

Every astronomer I know with a laser uses it responsibly. They are usually well aware of the danger of misuse. Like you say Robb, the problem is from these lasers in the wrong hands, and if they are banned, the culprits will find another outlet to annoy and create mischief...

All part of growing older, I suppose. And I was once a young punk who vowed to never become one of those old fogies who always complained about the young punks. Wow, how time (and knowledge) changes everything!

FAA: Laser incidents soar, threaten planes

More than 100 incidents occurred at Los Angeles International Airport last year in which the safety of planes was put at risk by people pointing at them with lasers, and nearly as many incidents at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, federal officials said Wednesday.

Overall, the number of incidents nationally in which people pointed lasers at planes and helicopters nearly doubled last year, from 1,527 incidents in 2009 to 2,836 incidents in 2010, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Be careful with those lasers, kids. Lives may depend upon it!
