Io transiting Jupiter Animation

This is a great clear animation from an Earthbound 14" SCT, located in Georgia...

Some think that Brian the astronomer is getting artifact capture on Io in this sequence. I think so too.

I think it's the line at the bottom of the picture for a moment.

I think it's referring to the slightest bit of detail Brian was able to capture of Io's surface. It appears there is some sort of banding or different coloration of sections of Io as it transits. Could be geologic or atmospheric.

I think it means that the light bouncing around Io is not actually coming from Io but is an artifact like a reflection or something like that perhaps from the scope. When you very first see the light coming from it at the beginning of the animation, it appears that it is not actually on the surface of Io, but bleeding out to the left like a reflection would do.

I am not sure at all about this, but taking a stab in ignorance and what my eyes see.

A tremendous video, artifact or not!

I like to stare at mojo's avatar for awhile to put me into a calm meditative state. Then I stare at my avatar and imagine I'm there! Oh how I miss you, Hawaii. I still remember everything about taking that photo as if it was only yesterday.

Sure do. It's how I find sundogs like these, morning of November 7, 2010.







I watch the Sun rise.





I also ignore the warnings on telescopes not to look directly at the Sun.









With solar activity picking up, I love looking at the Sun.

But always remember to wear your sunglasses. It won't protect your eyeballs, but you will look so mucher cooler.
