Last Thursday night was too good of a night to pass up telescope time, especially since I didn't have to work. I spotted Venus, Mars, and Saturn, but missed a nice ISS pass while setting up telescopes. The Moon, just two days past full, rose just before Jupiter. I spent a lot of time with those two that night, but also battled the Moonlight to observe many globular clusters early in in the night, and several open clusters before dawn, along with planet Uranus. Quite a few of the star clusters I had never seen before, including M92 in Hercules, and M34 in Perseus.
I've always loved watching the Galilean Moons shift around Jupiter, and used to document their motions by sketching them. My first Jovian observation of the night I sketched them for old time's sake, but the rest of the night I tried to capture them digitally.
All images were made using my 6" Orion Skyquest Dobsonian, with the stills taken from my Vivitar Vivicam pressed to 25 and 10mm eyepieces, while the video is from my Meade Lunar & Planetary Imager.
Around 3AM I was lucky enough to see the Great Red Spot come into view, and spent a lot of time trying to record it. GRS didn't come out well, but it is the first time I've captured it at all, so for me it was a success. The following video shows my best highlights of the night.
I also spent considerable time enjoying the lunar sunset, particularly along the Sea of Crises, but those images aren't ready for posting, so I will wait and post a new thread later.
