Chicago Astronomer Updated and Revised Public/Private/Research Observation sites

Usually, The Chicago Astronomers assemble by the Adler Planetarium for Star Parties and "Full Moon Rise" sessions. For years, we set-up just off the Copernicus Statue in front of the Adler, but restrictive parking and new lighting has made the spot undesirable.

Our new preferred spot in just off the Adler's parking lot with exclusive permitted parking for members and a great spot for foot traffic. Not a locale for serious astronomy, but for fun and easy sharing of views with visitors, fans and members.

We do have many other sites where we set up equipment for public viewing, but there are some semi-public spots and a reserved private location for serious astronomy, research and equipment testing. The Chicago Astronomer Research Site (C.A.R.S) is accessible by invite only.

I have created a revisable plot map of not only urban sites we like to set up at - (and some we don't)...but also those of our members who have found locations away from the city.

I encourage our members to update the Google plot map and post the revisions here in this thread.

I have added one of my usual observing sites to the ChAOS list. it is the lake across the street from my house. i also included a description of the usual viewing conditions.

Paulie, it's easy enough to post your sites on the ChAOS list. Follow the Google Maps link that Joe included in his OP. In order to edit the map and include your own sites, you'll need to sign into Google with a Google account. If you don't have one, you'll need to register. Once you're signed in, click on the "Edit" button at the top of the left pane. A toolbar will pop up on the map with some buttons for editing the map. Click the place marker button and then click anywhere on the map where you would like to add a place marker. Give it a name and then add some descriptions of the site. Click "OK" and you're done.

Simple as that! I would just try to stick with the same naming conventions that Joe uses for the observation sites. Keeps it nice and clean that way! Happy Googling!

I finally remembered to update the map. I like the idea so much that I "borrowed" it for a new page on "People's Astronomy."
