Okay, I'm sure this is a relatively simple question, but I'm a relative newbie. So, what I'm trying to figure out is if you have a motorized EQ mount that is tracking an object in the Northern sky from East to West, how does it know to reverse the tracking direction if you slew your scope to view an object in the Southern sky? I've seen "meridian flip" mentioned in a few places. Does this have anything to do with it?
On another topic, when I am setting up my scope for viewing and am trying to polar align it, what is the correct "home" position to start the alignment from? Should the scope be perfectly horizontal and pointing to the North direction with the counterweights pointing straight down? Should the setting circles be showing something specific in this starting position, such as 0 and/or 90 or something of the like?
