Hi everybody
I often do some sketching at the EP. Up to a few months ago I was using binoculars mounted on a tripod and a stool. This setup served me well for a year or so and I got some nice sketch's of OC's, including my favorite , The awesome double cluster in Persius. By the way there is a line of bright 6-7 magnitude stars comeing off of ngc 869 leading northish up to stock 2 that I would like to unofficialy name " The Patti Bridge " after my beautifull wife ( is there any way to make this official? ) Anyway , I
have looked at M42 with my binocs many many times, but now that I have a telescope and I have it working properly ( thats a whole other story ) and am comfortable with it I have been obseving M42 again and have been inspired the do a sketch. I began bt sketching the star field and a rough outline of the nebula and then did some more observational scrutinizing. After awhile I noticed, starting at the trapezium and going a little north and then spreading out to the east and west was a very black area. Using direct and averted vision and moving the scope slowly back and forth the dark area was very obvious. In doing some research I have discovered this is called a dark lane , and that over half of the Orion constellation is full of this interstellar dark matter. Now I need to do some more observing, now that I know more about what I'm looking for and add a little more rough detail. Then I can sit down at my kitchen table and do the final drawing.
