Here’s a photo I took this evening (2007 JUL 29 at 20:33 CDT) of the Full Moon rising from Arlington Heights, Illinois. That was 8 minutes after moonrise and 18 minutes after sunset. The Moon’s shape was noticeably distorted by atmospheric refraction at its low altitude. There was a slight haze along the horizon. The lights are from a village baseball field.

It was taken with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC F717 digital camera. The exposure was ISO 100, F/2.4 & 1/10 sec.

I plan to visit the lakefront tomorrow evening and capture some lunar rise images over lake Michigan.

I too will attempt to take a photo of tonight’s moonrise, which will occur later during twilight than last evening. It should be a pretty sight.

At the Adler Planetarium, the Moon will rise at 20:52 CDT. At that time the 98.5% illuminated Moon will be at azimuth 111.7°, which is close to east-southeast.

You may also want to stick around for the brief occultation of Mag 3.7 Gamma Capricorni beginning an hour later. It will be a graze for observers in central Illinois. Here are my predictions for the event at the Adler.

And here’s a photo I took the next evening (2007 JUL 30 at 20:59 CDT) of the Moon rising while one day past full from Arlington Heights, Illinois. That was 5 minutes after moonrise and 45 minutes after sunset. There was summer haze along the horizon.

It was taken with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC F717 digital camera. The exposure was ISO 100, F/2.4 & 1.6 sec.
