WOOHOO!!!
On 9/2 two other members and I of the Peoria Astronomical Society became keyholders to our Northmoor Observatory.
To be keyholder you have to be a member of the PAS for two years, put in volunteer hours at the observatory and take the training class.
Up to this time I haven't been allowed to operate the telescope.
I had to work the warm-up room, getting visitors to sign our guest book, take donations, answer questions and generally keep people amused while they wait their turn to look through the scope. I've enjoyed that and will continue.
But, now I can also operate the scope.
Northmoor Observatory is in the middle of Leo Donovan Golf Course in North Peoria. It is where we house our 9" 3600MM focal length refractor telescope.
Now that I'm a keyholder I can also use the scope anytime I choose.
The training was 1 1/2 hours long.
At the conclusion of the training Bill Cole, the Northmoor Observatory Chairman, handed the three of us our keys.
That was quite a surprise.
Usually the board of directors has to vote on new keyholders.
But, Bill said he changed that policy and it was his choice who got keys.
I'm the host for our Saturday night public observing session this week if Hurricane Frances doesn't spoil our skies.
I can't wait to get my hands on that big scope.
