Chicago Park District & The Chicago Astronomer joint Star Party

Mt. Greenwood Park

The next joint star party of the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Astronomer will be on Chicago's far Southwest side at Mt. Greenwood park - 3721 W. 111th St. Chicago IL 60655...On Wednesday, the 10th of October 2012 at 7:00 pm.

We are scheduled to start at 7:00 pm and share the skies with park visitors till 9:00 pm, but will most likely remain till 10:00 pm. I have selected the area just outside of the parking for ease of lugging the gear, visibility and with good foot traffic.

Of course, session is pending on weather conditions, but extended forecast is looking good. Monitor this thread and follow the Chicago Astronomer on Twitter/Facebook/Google+ for updates and confirmations.

We will have a good Moon to enjoy and share with all lovers of the night sky....be there.

I will be there. Hopefully someone can give me some pointers with my 8v. I seriously live 5 min away from this park. This is awesome you guys are coming to the SS

I sent an email to mt. Greenwood school letting then know CA was going to be there. I had an astronomy class there last year that went well. Hopefully they'll send a notes home with the kids.

Thanks Rich....it would be a great opportunity for students to come out and enjoy views through our scopes.

UPDATE:


Ok Kids, here is the deal....

Tomorrow's Mt. Greenwood star party is looking at a cloudy night.

The next few nights aren't a prize either, so the week of the 8th is looking like our next opportunity.

Now.....weather forecasters have been notoriously wrong, bringing clear skies and losing an opportunity.

A decision will be made Wednesday afternoon for a Go/No-Go status.

I will post here and on Twitter/facebook/google+ on the confirmation/cancellation.

UPDATE:

Tonight's Mt. Greenwood Park Star Party is...CANCELLED.

A weather front has settled in and hovering over Chicago for the next day/night...and we will have to reschedule for sometime soon.

I'm looking at this Friday, but wait for the confirmation.

UPDATE:

The Mt. Greenwood Park Star Party has been rescheduled for Tuesday, the 09th of October 2012 at 7:00 pm.

Extended weather forecast is calling for decent skies and chilly night time temps.

But, it should be a good evening of telescopes, Astronomers and fans of the night skies.

The weather is not looking good for Tuesday night's session...

Cloudy by nightfall, the weather forecasters say.

But....I will make a determination by Tuesday afternoon...and as a consolation....Wednesday is looking better and warmer!

Alright....

Weather does not look good for tonight's re-scheduled Mt. Greenwood Star Party. Ergo...tonight's session is CANCELLED.

Clouds are coming in and windy.

But....

We have re-re-scheduled this session for tomorrow,

Wednesday, the 10th of October at 7pm

The weather looks good and I think it will happen for us!

(This is good news for a couple of Chicago Astronomers who have commitments Tuesday evening... )

Solid confirmation tomorrow afternoon.

There is a lot of interest in this astro session at Mt. Greenwood and it's looking good for Wednesday night's time with Astronomers, Telescopes and stars.

We will have, as an additional attraction, 2 International Space Station passes and 1 bright (-7) Iridium Flare to enjoy during our session.

Tonight will be a nice experience.

Despite the cold it was a very fun time! Had a blast. Thank you Joe for taking the time to talk with me and explain the adjusting of my scope. I will tinker with it some more. Looking forward to the next outing.
