On January 17th (18th in eastern hemisphere) there will occur a rare occultation of one asteroid in front of another. Unfortunately both asteroids are dimmer than 17th magnitude, and the event will entirely occur over the South Pacific, never for observers on land. For locations on the path, the event will last about one second.
Book your trip before the rush! Perhaps we can entice Joe to serve as cruise director.
For the thousands of you who will undoubtedly be making the trip, I’ve created the preview map seen below. Panama is in the upper right and New Zealand in the lower left. The portion of the path west of my map is entirely south of Australia and New Zealand and north of Antarctica during the daytime.
Photos and descriptions from those who make the trip would be welcome additions to this thread.
