I received a flyer delivered to our front door yesterday with an interesting invitation to a public event coming up this Sunday at a church here on the NW side of the city. Mayfair Presbyterian is located one block north of the Chicago Public Library's Mayfair branch which is on Lawrence at Kostner a few streets East of Elston. Here is the full text:

"Our New View of the Universe"

Dr. Eric Carlson, Astronomer Emeritus of Chicago's Adler Planetarium, will present a slide presentation on how modern astronomy understands our universe at 11:30 a.m., Sunday, September 25 at the Mayfair Presbyterian Church (4358 W. Ainslie Street). The program includes a tour of our solar system, with special stops at Mars and Saturn: then out through the Milky Way Galaxy and beyond, some 15 billion light years to the edge of the known universe; and finally a look at how it all began. Sounds like a good one, and I will try to make the event, Sunday is a bit tight for me, but can't resist... ;D

I didn't see any familiar Chicago Astronomer faces in the crowd, but perhaps there were some lurking in the shadows. In any case, the 75 minute lecture by Dr. Carlson was outstanding. He covered a wealth of topics without seeming rushed nor overly scientific but with such clarity, awe and wonder as rarely heard in public lectures. It sure motivated me to go out and continue reading and learning.
