Brilliant Venus has commenced its apparition in the western sky after sunset following its superior conjunction behind the Sun on 2019 AUG 12. It will become its highest and brightest during the upcoming spring.

Being laid off during the COVID19 crisis I've had plenty of time to watch Venus's descent and shift to the north in the western sky after sunset the last five weeks.

It's funny because this apparition should be very similar to the spring of 2012, when I was anticipating the June Transit of Venus across the Sun. But in 2012 I don't think I saw Venus at all during May, and with the exception of the transit, didn't see Venus again until it re-emerged in the morning sky later in June. This evening apparition is helping me relive some of the anticipation of the 2012 ToV. I hope everybody has been following our planetary neighbor while sheltering in place.

Good to have you back, Paulie, but sorry it's due to a layoff. I'm retired, so no layoff, but have been properly self-quarantined. Joe has disappeared entirely from his own website here. Three weeks ago he sent me an email apologizing for ignoring my emails that he eventually found in his spam box. He said let's get to chatting again. Soon afterward I sent him couple of emails, but no response. They must have again found Joe's spam box.

Indeed, Venus has begun its descent from the evening sky while decreasing in brightness. Around May 22 Venus will be seen dancing with Mercury, its June replacement in the evening western sky. The young crescent Moon will join them on May 23. Stay safe and healthy.
