Our next joint session with the Chicago Park District will be the Perseid Meteor Shower at Northerly Island - Saturday, August 15th 2015 ...starting at 8:00 pm and sharing the skies with visitors till about 11:00 pm.
A misconception about Chicago skies is that meteors cannot be observed, due to the intense light pollution of the city. Where in fact, the brighter meteor streaks can be easily enjoyed, punching through the muck and haze, fascinating all those who observe. For those who cannot venture out to darker skies, the Chicago Astronomer will be on site to instruct visitors on this meteor shower and train Telescopes on summer objects for our guests - including Jupiter, Saturn and perhaps even Neptune and Uranus.
This year's Swift-Tuttle Perseid Meteor shower is forecasted to be a good one, with no Moon glare and allowing the fainter meteors to display their travel while ionizing in our atmosphere and Earth plowing through a thicker band of the Swift-Tuttle comet debris stream. Look for the different colors of the streaks, representing different elements.
As an added bonus, (Like Chicago Astronomers need one...) The International Space Station will make a high Midwest pass during our session:
