It’s nearly time for my monthly naked-eye New Moon spotting challenge. Success may appear rather unlikely, but some North Americans may want to attempt spotting the less than half-day-old Moon after sunset on January 20 with Mercury and Venus as guides. Others should have much better luck the next evening.

Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date and time with zone.

Below is a photo that I shot from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Moon aged 21:46 hrs on 2007 MAR 19 at 19:29 CDT (a personal record).

Last night's 1% illuminated crescent was probably not possible for me due to the western foothills seen below even if it hadn't been cloudy.

4% and clear, tonight, with Venus along for the ride, alas, Mercury had already set before I got myself outside:
