During the evening of Sunday, January 18, Jupiter's Galilean satellite #3 Ganymede will totally occult #2 Europa, while Ganymede's shadow is transiting Jupiter. I've determined that the mid-time of the 27-second total occultation will be 20:33:30 CST (Jan 19 at 02:33:30 UT). 

Photos and descriptions of the events would be welcome additions to this thread.

As an advance notice, there will be a rare triple shadow transit during the night of 2015 JAN 23-24. The next triple shadow transit after that won't happen until 2032.

Bill & I observed this, though in poor seeing conditions. When Europa & Ganymede started to appear near each other, the angular resolution just wasn't good enough in the turbulent air to separate the two.

The skies looked better than most we have had in the past weeks. I'm surprised that Bill and Paulie didn't have the viewing to catch the event properly....brave souls that they are.

Let's hope the 23rd will be clear.

Sunday was a nice, clear, and somewhat warm January night, but seeing was not very good. Jupiter was boiling away. Using low power helped settle things down a bit, but reduced angular resolution. Going with higher power, though, greatly maginified the atmospheric instability, and with Jupiter & moons jumping around so much, contact points of all interactions were badly blurred.
