Chicago Astronomer Pre-Full Moon Party

After a long stretch of rain and clouds, a high pressure system is finally over the Chicago area...and with it - clear cool skies.  


And no clear sky should go without scopes punching through the urban haze. So, I am organizing a Day-Before-Full Moon-Rise party this Friday evening, the 11th of July 2014 at 7:00 pm.  Full Moon is the next day on Saturday, but weather looks iffy. This will be an awesome event...and bringing better detail along the sunrise limb of the lunar surface in our scopes.

But, due to the inconvenient mess that the Taste of Chicago event brings, (street closures, parking restrictions etc....), I am relocating this session to our back up site at Montrose Harbor - avoiding any potential hassles.  This site was uber successful for last month's Full Moon rise and we had a great crowd of Chicago Astronomer fans who followed us there.

Moonrise is at 7:35 pm and we will arrive by 7:00 pm to set-up and welcome our guests.

Actually, Joe, you're doing it right this month. If your check my timetable for Full Moon risings as seen from Chicago, you'll see that the fullest rising Moon this month will come on Friday, July 11: www.CurtRenz.com/moon

The Moon will actually become its fullest this month (99.85%) when below our horizon at 07:04 CDT on Saturday morning. Of course we'd need X-ray vision to see it. When it rises on Friday it will appear 99.62% full and still waxing. When it rises on Saturday it will be only 99.27% full and already waning.

What was to be a great session with the Moon and Chicago Astronomer fans tonight.....will be clouded out.

A cloud mass has infiltrated the area now, bringing Thunderstorms for late tonight and tomorrow.  It may clear up...it may not. The weather system is too unsteady now and uncertain.

We will reschedule another Full Moon rise gathering for next month for the so-called "SuperMoon".....but really, nothing super about it.

I've been keeping an eye on the weather for this since this morning, and even around noon it looked like there was a decent chance for clear, or at least partly clear skies. Just looked out the window a few minutes ago, and lost all hope of seeing Luna tonight.

It’s a shame, Joe, that the weather gods failed to cooperate. I was planning to attend tonight. As with Horner Park, Montrose Harbor is easier for me from Arlington Heights than trying to fight through the downtown and further south traffic.

As noted on my Full Moon risings timetable ( www.CurtRenz.com/moon ), the date of the fullest moonrise in August for Chicago will be Sunday the 10th. It will be the rising Full Moon with the greatest angular diameter this year, but the brightest will come on Monday September 8th. I suppose we can debate which should be dubbed the Supermoon.
