It’s nearly time for my monthly naked-eye New Moon spotting challenge. Some North Americans might spot the nearly two-day-old Moon on June 28. Others should have better luck the next evening.

Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date and time with zone.

Below is a photo that I shot from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Old Moon in the New Moon’s Arms above fireworks. The Moon was aged 2.0 days on 2008 JUL 04 at 21:21 CDT.

Sorry for the late update, but I also saw Luna Sunday night, over Lincolnway in Valpo, at 8:54 PM CDST, two hours after Patrick's sighting. The sky cleared just in time to see it at all that night.

Early spotting of a New Moon will become even tougher during the coming months as the sunset angle narrows between the ecliptic and horizon. Meanwhile, a Half Moon will appear to be sitting nicely next to Mars on a warm and clear Saturday evening. It's a shame that I could not generate interest in a Turner Camp star party for that night.
