Taken on a 127 mm Orion Mak scope on Celestron AVX mount.
Half a second exposure with full spectrum modded Canon 10D and a 1000 nm NIR filter.

What gives the purple tint?

Near infrared light. This filter blocks all visible light and all near infrared below 1000 nm, so what you are seeing is near infrared from 1000 nm to 1100nm approximately. This pic was taken with a Canon 10D dslr with the internal filter removed, so now it can take pics from around 200 to 1100 nm(ultraviolet-below 400 nm, visible-400 to 760, and near infrared-760 to 1100 nm approx.).
