The Chicago Astronomer will set-up telescopes in Dan Ryan Woods as part of our Cook County Forrest Preserve Partnership, this Friday - the 18th of October 2013 - from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The event is called " Stars, Smores, and Stories." We will set-up equipment by the newly renovated shelter at Grove #5, which should not be too hard to locate..

" I-94 south to E. 87th Street and turn west. Dan Ryan Woods is about 2.5 miles west of I-94. Entrances are along 87th Street, Western Avenue"

Also....

We will have a full Moon this evening and just a hint of a lunar eclipse. This is a minor eclipse and a barely noticeable darkening might occur....nothing to get excited about. But this will be a good opportunity to explain about eclipse mechanics.

Moonrise will be at 5:53 pm, but the slight Penumbral eclipse will have already started an hour earlier. Maximum immersion will be at 6:50 pm and the whole "non" eclipse will end at 8:48 pm.

The weather just might corporate, as extended forecasts are calling for rain later in the evening.

Sorry kids, but this evening's Astronomical portion of the outdoor event at the Dan Ryan Woods...has been CANCELLED.

We have a heavy cloud mass pushing it's way from the southwest and there seems to be no let up...not even sucker holes. I wanted till late afternoon to make the call and conferred with the on-site organizer.

We were looking forward and anticipating this event at the woods but it's no-go.
