I'm disappointed.

I looked at the graph above earlier this year for Mercury, but I didn't pay attention to Venus. After being nice and high along the late winter and spring ecliptic in 2012, this year Venus never gets very high. Once it reaches about 10 degrees above the horizon 30 minutes after sunset, it pretty much stays there until October, and maxes out at 17 degrees high 30 minutes after sunset in December. *sigh*

Even in mid-May last year, knowing full well that Venus had a transit date June 5, it was riding high after sunset. This will be the most disappointing evening apparition of Venus I can remember. (Not that that is saying all that much).

For what it's worth, this is essentially a repeat of the 2005 evening apparition of Venus.

I wasn't blaming you.

In 2005 I was watching the White Sox, not the sky. So it's new to me. In fact, anything that reminds me of that wonderful year of two championship baseball teams (the Gary Railcats won the Northern League Championship Series) is a great thing. I'm suddenly impressed with this apparition of Venus.

Well I certainly won’t promise that all history will repeat this year, but there is one plus for this Venus apparition. Here in the early spring each day Venus ascends further into the evening sky more rapidly than is the usual case following a superior conjunction.

I finally got my first look at Venus for this apparition last night. I will post pictures as soon as I can.
