I got a call on Sunday, my brother saying it was time to bring back out a toy that hasn't rolled in over 8 years...

It's a 460 CI Lincoln motor punched out to a 533 CI at 11.5:1 compression with two stages of nitrous. As you can see from the video, the dual 750 CFM double pumper Holley's are running too rich of jets, and the suspension is completely off. The nitrous hasn't been touched yet, plenty to do until that button is pressed... but it ran and did a wheelie!

I have to admit, I feel a little silly whenever I pop the clutch on my PT Cruiser, but sometimes it just has to be done.

If you guys ever want to come to the track, I'll let you know next time it's out.

He ordered new jets for the carbs on Monday, they should be here soon. So next time to the track he'll have new jets in the carbs, and may be taking them apart between runs to figure out which work best for which temp/humidity.

The other major problem is that suspension. It's all set up for complete adjustments (my brother use to work at Strange Engineering before starting a company with me.) The wheelie is cool, but actually slows you down in the 1/4 mile. Ideally, since it is about the show too, a small wheelie is cool when it's under control. The way it's currently set up, it's not under control.

The important part is slowing the video down and seeing how the suspension expands and compresses. Once you can see EXACTLY what is happening, you can adjust it so that it's an even controlled wheelie (or non at all if you'd rather) and get that HP to the floor.

Anyway... to that, I figured out how to slow the video down within YouTube and it's been gone over a BUNCH of times over the last couple days here - here's how so you can see what I mean -

Oh, you guys know another local guy - I grew up a couple blocks away from him in Chicago here - Fred Hagan, and his son Fred Jr (who I'm friends with)

He travels around to the divisional NHRA races, did quite well last year (3rd I think) I've pitted for him, wow what a rig he runs - a complete 18 wheeler to tow it and the computers and meters on that motor is insane. When the race is over, the data is taken right into the semi to the computer station, it's total science and WAY WAY COOL if you're allowed to review the data... but that's total privy data!

12.1 on the run in the video with everything a mess as it was and no nitrous (he can spay over 500HP of nitrous alone with two complete fuel systems.) Only did the one pass, too many things were too far off so no need to run it again. 8 years ago it was running 10 second 1/4 miles, but this is a whole new bigger engine so we'll see...

The new jets were delivered this morning. They'll probably be put in this afternoon (ha, he just ran home at lunch so he may be starting that right now.)

It's actually a Ford/Lincoln 460 block punched out to 533 with a Chevy crank and rods. It's like a Frankenstein motor he built himself.

But why go to all the trouble of building such a custom motor when you can get 620hp of pump gas performance directly from Chevrolet.

I'm pretty sure it's the rods and crank, and yes I know that sounds really weird. He put the motor together, at least the lower half, when the car was taken apart 8 years ago so I forget all the details.

Ha, of course doing a Google search on 533 big blocks ends me up on some forum post from 2007 from my brother (twekd1) - here's more on the motor, custom crank I guess, he barely remembers -- we started a company together sometime in-between this car -

Funny to read that post now. The last couple months he ran some insane number of feet of wire in it, replaced ALL the wires, still has all regular key ignition, turn signals, horn, brake lights, etc. and ran all the new wires to all the MSD, nitrous, etc...

The car may be back at the track this weekend, depends on weather. I may be there too, or further up in Wisconsin camping, also depends on weather... where's spring?!!?

Yeah,

The Tesla is a beautiful car. The craftsmanship is nothing short of incredible. I was at their show room at Old Orchard.
Its expensive...something like 52k for the 150 mile per charge version and I think 80k for 300 mile per charge. It takes about 45 mins for a complete charge to be able to go 300+ miles.
Never asked if I could drive it, since I suspected they would not.
I will stick to the vette for now. ;D

That would be in the middle of a long trip when you stop for a bite to eat while your car gets a free recharging at a Tesla Supercharger station. For that kind of distance I ride a plane or train. 99% of the time you will top off the charge each night from an ordinary electrical outlet in your home garage. The savings on fuel expenses make the actual cost of owning the car much less. It's the wave of the future. In a few years Tesla will offer a smaller and less expensive model. By that time batteries are expected to be considerably more powerful yet much cheaper. Argonne Labs is working on that. Have fun with your vette for now, but its days are numbered.

I have not seen it yet, but one of my friends bought a Tesla. My insurance agent, a mutual friend, has driven it though, and said it was super sweet.

My driving trip to Denver in the Tesla would have a few serious problems.

1. I could not afford to buy it. At least not the long distance version.
2. There is nowhere to charge it from Ohmaha to just about Colorado.

Any idea what it costs to replace the batteries. It last 8 years and cost 12k to replace. I know they have some replacement pay up front deal for 8k. What a bargin.

Battery technology has to get ALOT better.

IMO solid oxide fuel cells are the way to go. But they too have huge hurtles to overcome.

I have cousins near Denver, and I fly to visit them. Tesla will be greatly expanding its network of free Supercharger stations, and plans to make a related announcement later this month. Of course you can recharge overnight through an electrical outlet at a motel. The government funded JCESR project led by nearby Argonne Labs has a mission to make batteries five times more powerful and five times cheaper within five years. I wouldn't bet against the group they have assembled. They have a Manhattan Project mentality. Their success would make available better and cheaper batteries before you need a replacement. I don't know your financial situation, but electric cars are far cheaper to operate, and Tesla recently announced a financing program that is similar to a lease but allows you to claim the generous federal and state tax credits of an owner.

You sure on that? That's not what I've been hearing, although I don't personally own one and aren't up on that stats of it all. And I don't mean one of those uber-dorky Prius things or whatever other version (sorry if anyone owns one) that has the power of an electric bike.

Maybe with some tax credits it works out, guess it depends if it's my cost - or the governments. Last I remember reading, stuff like the Chevy Volt was a dead project.

They contribute to political campaigns and advertise heavily in the media. Tesla Motors does not currently advertise or even have a marketing department, so some in the media are less than friendly. I know about Tesla, they're cool - hope it all gets mainstream. It's not yet, currently a big kid toy.

For now though, I'm not talking about some kinda conspiracy theory with the media and big oil. I'm talking about people I know who've bought those pieces of junk with the same cheaper running thoughts. Parts are crazy expensive and not many people know how to fix them, so don't expect cheap repairs. It's cool when new, but not for the long haul, so I guess it depends on how much you usually turn your cars over and how many of your own wrenches you turn. For now, from everyone I know who's own one, it's still cheaper on my pocket to burn dinosaurs. And I do hope that changes, don't get me wrong - my Honda Big Ruckus' gets about 70MPG

Are you referring to a Tesla or other electric cars? Perhaps hybrids? There really is no comparison. An electric motor is extremely simple. An internal combustion engine is not. Tesla's solar powered Supercharger stations are free, and overnight home charging costs far less than gasoline.

Tesla's warranty includes company owned repair facilities and a team of rangers dispatched to travel to you to deal with any problems. If necessary, the ranger will provide you with a free loaner Model S and take your car to the shop.

The general warranty is for four years and can be extended for four more. The original battery warranty is for eight years.

If you take part in the new financing program, Tesla Motors' billionaire CEO has promised to buy back your car even if the company fails. The residual value percentage would be based on the better of a Tesla Model S or a Mercedes S. Of course if that were to occur he would immediately resell the car, so any potential loss for him would not be great. I really don’t expect Tesla to fail. I’m betting it will prove to be the first successful new American car manufacturer in ninety years.
